Thanks for the comments everyone!
I hope they keep it that way. Capitol Reef is my favorite of the five Utah parks, not just for the geology and scenery but also the atmosphere. Getting to enjoy a long trail on my own is a far cry from the pushy tourist vibe that happens at some of the other parks. It was a night and day difference going from doing the Upper Muley Twist canyon one day to going to Island in the Sky the next.
I agree. The first time I visited I was only there for a short time. I made the mistake of thinking that what one sees when driving through on the main highway plus the one popular road in the park was the whole of the place.
The second time I went we took more time and traveled a bit further afield, including to some of the areas you visited, and got to some beautiful areas just outside the park boundaries, too.
The third time I visited was with a group of photographer friends, and we met up with another photographer friend who lives very close by. He knows the place very, very well.
The fourth time I went alone, though I met up with a California photographer friend. He and I did one afternoon photographing in nearby areas (close to the Fruita campgrounds) but for the rest of the time we wandered off to other locations.
It is a beautiful and quiet park, and I hope it remains that way, too. (One of the photographs from that trip was in an exhibit at the Yosemite Ansel Adams Gallery a couple years ago, a show devoted to the legacy of photographers in protecting the history of the parks.)
