p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A few from Utah

Just got back from another Utah road trip. This one was slightly more interesting because my lens (Olympus 7-14 Pro) had just started making a rattling sound the week before the trip, along with having some feeling of resistance at times on the zoom ring. This would clear up with some shaking, as though the pebble or whatnot loose inside had moved. Since I didn't have enough time to send it in for repair last week, I had to take it and hope for the best. Thankfully it didn't malfunction during the trip, and is now on its way back to the Olympus service center.

Anyways, here are the photos. Still trying to get the hang of editing in Lightroom to give things a realistic look. Constructive tips and criticism welcome. I'm here to learn!

Dead Horse Point near sunrise, this precise spot as seen on Westworld S1E1 where the Man in Black interrogates and scalps a guy. (I had been to this spot before I saw Westworld and was quite thrilled upon watching it. Kinda nice seeing places you've been in shows.)

My first attempt at a pano shot, 3 shots off the tripod at one of the thinner points of the rim route of the Upper Muley Twist canyon. Was trying to get it to show both sides of the rim and how different they are. This was the most incredible trail I've done so far in my life. More than a few places where you need sure footing, but I still can't wait to go back.

Another from the Upper Muley Twist canyon, looking down the canyon itself from up on the rim.

A spot in Little Wild Horse canyon, at a brief lull when the platoon-sized family outings weren't passing by.

The Burr Trail switchbacks around sunset. I took some at sunrise too, but I like this one better.

All great photos. I really like seeing both sides of Muley Twist. It IS interesting to see the huge contrast with the geology on either side.
The most beautiful of this great set is the last one, IMO. Really nice view there.

Nice set. If I was to pick one it would be #1.

These remind me of how much I want to get back to red rock country. (I've avoided the place for non-photographic reasons for the past couple of years.)

Capitol Reef is a great location. I've been told "by people who know things" that the NPS's intention is to keep a lot of this park relatively undeveloped, partly for research reasons but also with the side effect of reducing the crowds. There are some long drives to get to places — including some you visited — and many are on somewhat rough roads... but the rewards are often worth it.

I hope they keep it that way. Capitol Reef is my favorite of the five Utah parks, not just for the geology and scenery but also the atmosphere. Getting to enjoy a long trail on my own is a far cry from the pushy tourist vibe that happens at some of the other parks. It was a night and day difference going from doing the Upper Muley Twist canyon one day to going to Island in the Sky the next.

So nice! Nice job! Makes me look forward to desert wandering in Aug! Have to have at least a dose of desert every year! They look very realistic.

I agree. The first time I visited I was only there for a short time. I made the mistake of thinking that what one sees when driving through on the main highway plus the one popular road in the park was the whole of the place.

The second time I went we took more time and traveled a bit further afield, including to some of the areas you visited, and got to some beautiful areas just outside the park boundaries, too.

The third time I visited was with a group of photographer friends, and we met up with another photographer friend who lives very close by. He knows the place very, very well.

The fourth time I went alone, though I met up with a California photographer friend. He and I did one afternoon photographing in nearby areas (close to the Fruita campgrounds) but for the rest of the time we wandered off to other locations.

It is a beautiful and quiet park, and I hope it remains that way, too. (One of the photographs from that trip was in an exhibit at the Yosemite Ansel Adams Gallery a couple years ago, a show devoted to the legacy of photographers in protecting the history of the parks.)
