| p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A9 FW 5.0 Tracking of Finches in flight... | |
Tried out the new tracking modes on Purple Finches launching from blackberry bushes towards a feeder. Used Flex Spot Med: Tracking. I've shot this exact same scenario at the same location on older versions of the A9 FW.
The success of these bursts (20FPS) was higher than I remember from previous FW. Before I recall getting at most 2 shots sharp in a burst. With FW 5.0 I had a few sequences with 5-6 in a row sharp. The last three here are all in the same sequence.
I do a small pan with the finch as it launches. Everything happens so fast that I don't really even "see" the finch go across the VF. Some bursts have zero in focus or even the finch hardly in the frame. I always shoot a bit loose and rely on some cropping to hopefully keep the finch in frame.
The success of these shots and the new Tracking mode comes from being able to start tracking while the bird is just perched on the blackberry bushes and keep AF-ON held down (and thus Tracking active) the whole time until it launches. Trying to acquire tracking in mid flight of a bird this small and not against blue sky would be a total fluke at best.
Unfortunately for this set I didn't get any of the much more attractive male so you will have to be satisfied with the female.
It should be noted I have also had successful finches in flight at this same location with the 1DX2, D500 and D850 but the new FW on the A9 certainly increased keepers.
