p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wedding Photography - Landscape Style

I've been inspired by landscape photography as it's nothing but magical when done correctly. I'll admit that I have a ton to still learn from the masters. So CC is strongly encouraged. I wanna learn and learn bad. The processing style below is consistent to my current work but would be open to processing the images differently as I know I'm cooking the images too much. =/

note: still trying to figure out how to post the images. !!! <---got it~

Well...I'm a big fan of "land/city scape" portraits. I think you'll just need to practice a bit. In both of your photos, there is a lot of distractions with little to no emphasis on your subjects. Yeah...I also agree with you, that they are "cooked" a bit too much.

I don't see a lot of photography in this style, but I know of a studio near me that might be the best at it...

I really like where you're going with this. Beautiful location, and I believe I see some good posing as well.

Problem is, there's a distinct lack of shadow that results in substantial visual confusion here. My eye has absolutely no idea where you, as the artist, want it to go. Also I'm all for expansive landscape imagery, but your couple is completely, and I mean completely lost in the composition. In 1, 2, and 3 I can hardly make out their likeness.

I think of all the images in the set, 5 has the most potential. I can see the couple, the raised foot, the kiss, it's cute. The reflection is a nice touch, and the stones to the right push my eye toward the highlights/blue sky in the left where the couple is conveniently and I imagine intentionally placed. Again though, the elements of the landscape are competing for attention here and I feel the whole left side of the frame is wasted space. A square crop maybe?

Keep it up! Again, I really do like where you are going with this.

I like this different take on wedding photos. I agree that the photos where you can more quickly spot the couple rather than having to hunt for them are more successful (in my subjective opinion), but all of the photos are lovely. You have a good eye for both portrait and landscape photography.

While I might go a different direction — based on my own stylistic preferences — your idea of placing the subjects in highly detailed landscapes can work. (In a full portfolio of such portraits I think most clients would also like to see a few images in which they occupy a larger portion of the space.)

There are a few classic "issues" that I see right away — some things that show up in a lot of landscape photography and which, when handled with a bit of care, can easily be fixed.

One to watch out for is the overexposure of the highlight, particularly the clouds, where you see no remaining texture in the brightest areas which have blown out to completely white. (Not only does that make the clouds look odd, but in prints there will be no pigment in those areas, potentially creating a gloss differential issue.)

It also looks like you have increased the brightness of some areas in post — in one photograph it is the sky near the horizon, in another the rock behind the two subjects. To my eyes, that looks distracting — it actually takes my attention away from the primary subject of the couple.

You might also consider darkening non-central areas a bit rather than — or in addition to — lightening the area of focus. The fourth example has a few examples of what I'm thinking of. Notice that the area where the figures are is far from the lightest in the scene, and that two much brighter (and larger!) areas draw attention away from them — the bright rocks at left and the extremely bright area above the horizon.

Thank you... this is the kind of CC I'm looking for to grow. Appreciate that you took the time to CC.
