My 5DIII files are fine, as are my SL1. The thumbnails show the file when I click on them in all my cameras except the 5DIV. They opened until I had to restore my PC. I've tried defaulting to different photo viewers, I have tried downloading Codec files from Microsoft but they all say they aren't for the version of Windows I have, which is Win 10 X64. I am able to open the files in LR and PS but it is kind of a pain to not be able to see what they are prior to this so that I don't import files I don't wish to. Any insight or help would be very appreciated. I have tried googling it and tried all their fixes with no luck. This is driving me nuts.

I did some searching with codecs myself and a lot of people have been asking the very same question on various forums, ranging from Microsoft, Canon and many others.

So far the only solution people have been able to provide is using the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack.

Just use Bridge, which is Adobe's file browser. It sounds like you have a Creative Cloud subscription, in which case you already have a Bridge license. The download can be found in the Apps tab of the Creative Cloud utility (at least that's where it is on Mac—I assume it's the same on Windows).

Bridge is a full file browser which displays thumbnails. It handles non-photographic files too. It can also display EXIF data directly. The only limitations I've found on the Mac version are that it doesn't handle Unix symbolic links and it obeys the Windows rules for mouse focus instead of the Mac ones. I've never used the Windows version.

I believe the April 2019 update to W10 will have an updated codec. That is what has been stated by MS.

Kathy, does that mean the W10 update worked, or did you buy FastPictureViewer?

I know Bridge shows thumbnails, but there are a lot of advantages to be able to see thumbnails using Windows Explorer.

Edit: Never mind, I see my work PC now displays thumbnails, so it was the Windows update. I think this is the first time in years that MS has done this. I don't think Windows 7 was ever able to display thumbnails on its own.

So what is the solution please?

I'm on Windows 10 version 1809 bang up to date e.g. cumulative update for x64 KB4490481 but neither my Canon 5D Mark IV or my Canon 6D Mark II RAW files show in explorer. My earlier ones like my 5DS-R are fine and always were.

The last Adobe software that I use is CS6. However Bridge CC will work with thumbnails etc. I tend to use an old copy of Breezebrowser Pro if I want to view files quickly; its similar to Faststone but more functionality.

Ashton,

Not sure how to fix your issue. I installed the FastPictureViewer on my home PC months ago because initially Wndows 10 did not show thumbnails. I know my work PC also didn't show thumbnails at first, but suddenly now it does. Not sure when the change happened. That machine is running Windows 10 Enterprise, and it's up to date.

I've Googled around and it looks like Windows 10 should be showing CR2 files. I have no trouble viewing 5DIV RAW files, as well as older going back to at least my 7D.

The fast picture viewer codec fixed it. iI lost it when i refreshed my pc and had forgotten. I had to rebuy it but just glad to have the thumbnails back.
