Sycamore Canyon, San Diego (-ish), CA.

Not the golden hour, obviously.

I actually find golden hours in the mountains or sculpted terrain very challenging, because there are always large areas in deep shadow. In the field GND don't work, because there is no linear separation from light and dark. Simple localized exposure changes or shadow lifting in post sometimes work, but more often than not the hue of the shadow areas are very different requiring lots of color correction to match.

Comments/critiques/suggestions for improvement welcome.

I really like your landscapes, with the last being a standout. But I'm biased. I especially like these rolling hills in Southern California that are dotted with boulders. There seems to be a north-south zone of these areas about 30-50 miles from the coast. Yesterday, I was exploring new locations for wildflowers and found a new boulder landscape, probably not too far from yours, but it was all blocked off by barbed wire and new gated housing developments. So, I couldn't find a good access point for taking photos. So, take'em while you can.

Thanks, jdc62!

Is there a SoCal group for sharing photo locations, with ratings/comments not just to the photo ops, but also, e.g. accessibility, hints to points of interest etc.?

People who photograph in SoCal a lot probably have had a few bad experiences with aggressive, inconsiderate, selfish photographers who intrude into special places and ruin the photographic experience for everyone else. So, there is a reluctance to share these locations with others.

Examples are photographers who trample wildflower foregrounds to make sure no one else will photograph there; breaking fences to get access to private property, which causes the property owners to take actions against all photographers; driving offroad vehicles into sensitive areas, despoiling the area with tire tracks; scaring off prime wildlife, which ruins the day's shooting for the careful photographers. In my experience, the last example is the most common.

This is awful.

Well, I guess the "scaring off prime wildlife" is more toward the "stupid/ignorant" side of things, but the others are in the "truly awful human being" category.
