p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · LR Auto over-exposes on import, but not when manually applied

I was just asked to help with some partial processing of 500 photos. When I created a preset for Auto only, they almost all came in over-exposed. After importing, when I click on the Auto button again for a particular shot, LR adjusts the exposure down, on average, by about 50%. I found info on the web about the Auto feature over-exposing, but it's not clear to me that this info is in the context of applying preset.

Any ideas on how I can get Auto to work right when the photos are initially imported?

Adobe did something in version 7 that messed up the Auto feature at import. I use to have Auto apply at import but it over-road my Default Develop settings that applied lens corrections and a few other adjustments.

A few things you can try. After import and while in the Library module select grid view, select all files and then apply Auto in the Quick Develop window.

I use this plug-in. It is the last one called Personalized Auto Tone. It lets you control what Sensei thinks. I find (as others have mentioned) that Auto reduces the contrast a bit too much. I set the plugin to only reduce the contrast by 25% of what Sensei thinks. Adobe is aware of this and is working on it.

The nice part abut this plug-in is that you can select all the files in the develop module, apply it and it evaluates each file separately. You can use it on a donation basis and it requires a donation for every version change. Not 8.1, 8.2. etc but when it goes to LR9.

Not sure of this will help but one thing I learned about Auto - it does not play nice with Canon profiles. It tends to over-protect highlights and underexposes files quite a bit. Now I import using Adobe Color, apply Auto and then apply a Canon profile. Sensei was built and trained using Adobe profiles so that would explain it. Using presets after import is pretty easy and fast for that part. I found ColorChecker Passrport files don't suffer this.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a really helpful reply -- I appreciate it. I'll look into the plug-in and, at the very least, use your Quick Develop method going forward.

Jeffrey Friedl is pretty good at supporting his plug-ins, which can only be a good thing. That includes tweaking or adding features. Also, his Lr experience allows him to explain why some things just cannot be done by plug-ins.

I'm on another forum that is LR/PS specific and the inconsistency when applying Auto at import is apparently a bug. One of the staff submitted a report to Adobe.

In that thread I learned something new. In the Develop module select a group or all photos, flip the Sync Switch up which sets it to Auto Sync and it will analyze each file separately when applying Auto.
