Shooting these small birds in flight is super hard. I read the thread re topaz and what you wrote. If the raw is not tack sharp I am not sure there is any program out there that will fix that. My best suggestion i to shoot at least 1/5000 shutter speed or if you have the light, 1/6400 to get a tack sharp file. I have a couple of these type of images over the years but the vast majority are deletes because of motion blur. Now that I have the D850 and the 500PF it will be something I will be working on this year when the insect eaters return to the north east.
If you have not done so, check out the vast selection of just insane in flight shots that Alan Murphy has of songbirds. He does not do what you were doing which is actually focusing on the bird, he prefocuses to an area, uses a remote shutter and blasts when the bird is in his area. What you are trying to do is vastly harder which is why I am recommending the super fast shutter speed. Good luck and looking forward to more......Show more →

Very nicely done Dave, knowing how difficult these birds are to capture in flight, you sure pulled it off.

Dave, that image is jaw-droppingly impressive! What is your shutter speed on that one, please? At least 1/2000sec, I would say. YGMV!

Thanks for taking a look and for your generous comments. I did not admit it but I am sure you all know, I took a few hundred shots to get this one. The bird was moving fast and erratically. Only a few shots came out well. Many completely missed the bird.
Joshua, you are correct that the shutter speed was pretty high, 1/3200.
