I used three lights. Two gridded soft boxes from behind and angled to the sides and one ungridded soft bow in front above the subject. Composited the image onto the background.

Hi Tom. There's a lot to like in this image, but the hot spots on the side are are too bright for me. My eyes keep going to them rather than on the central part of the face and there's a lot of interest in the face.

I like, but one nit to pick is the reflection of the white floor covering and the person holding it.

I really really really like this shot, but I agree that the blown highlights on the sides of his face takes it down a few notches for me.

I’m grateful for the feedback. This shoot was part of a mission to composite a 5 member blues band into one final image. I shot 5 gentleman seperatly and then cut them out of the background and positioned them onto a black background. The reason for that was if the band changed its lineup in the future I could shoot the new member and pop him or her into the picture (and....it happened twice so I’m glad I did it). We were aiming for a high intensity, gritty image. This was one of the out-takes and I cut out the man pictured here and worked on my compositing skills. I have a version where I photoshopped out the reflection in the sunglasses.

Again.....many thanks for the feedback/advice/comments. I take it all in and learn from it.

I would have used a much warmer white balance for the face, given the background. Alternatively, a tungsten white balance for the face, to contrast the background. Just a thought(s).

I like the color and texture of the bg, but for this image, it seems distracting - too bright and too saturated. The previous comments are all spot on regarding the lighting on his face. I think you could re-work this without much trouble into a grittier, bluesier image.
