Anyone gone from Batis 18 to this lens?

I am very happy with Batis 18 weight, IQ, volume and weather sealing for my occasional UWA use but tempted to swap 90g weight and 19mm in length (may actually be lower volume than the rotund B18) for the extra range if there isn’t much IQ difference at 17-18mm.

I did. Don't miss it at all. 67mm filter fits better with my existing lenses as well. I didn't have them side by side to directly compare though. But like I said, I have not missed it at any point. In fact the 17-28 paired with the 50 1.4 is turning out to be a nice 2 lens kit. It has actually stolen some time from my 24GM which I honestly thought would never happen.

ultra wide lenses... I just never jived with them until I met the 17-28.

12-24 probably favorite of all time, 77mm filter hack, works great, issue is that it's f4, and indoors, that's just a royal pain. Still have the lens, will likely keep it because 12mm can be cool at times.

16-35L too big, f4

16-35za too big, f4

14-24/16-35f2.8 of any kind..... too big

cv 10, 12, 15, all dedicated ultrawides, and too specialized?

14 f2.8 too specialized

24 f1.4 too specialized, but I do like quite a bit. The natural shooting of 24mm primes in general just not a long term shooting habit.

28 f2, really like this lens, but I can give up one stop for a ton of convenience. Works great for normal lens.

My current most practical primes are 35, 28, 24, 50 in that order.... and I generally dont ever carry wider primes anymore, just not that practical, considering, that a 17-28 is as big as two small primes, which makes it a wonderful lens. Had it been bigger or extending zoom, I dont think I'de like it as much.

I just love this lens, it's so right, even with the compromises. It's a shame that it's sorta ugly compared to sony, super ugly compared to voigtlander

Same question I have. Corners of this lens look soft comparatively in the Phillip Reece review, even stopped down.

Long thread, I promise I'll read. Question is how it compares at 18 with batis and 21 with loxia? Sharpness and colour is the concern, I suppose sunstars from loxia are better. Many thanks.

I feel the same way as you. The 12-24mm is probably my favorite UWA since that 12mm is truly special. But it is hard to justify keeping both the 12-24 and Tamron 17-28 considering the huge overlap. The 12-24 also holds a special place in my heart since it has traveled the world with me. But when money gets tight I may have to sell.

I think the Sony 12-24 and Tamron 17-28 make a versatile combination. The 12-24 is sharp from 12~22. It is farly compact and lightweight. The Tamron is sharp across its focal range. There is overlap, but the Tamron is a stop faster, can be used with filters, has better flare/ghosting performance, better color, is better for sunstars, and is also fairly compact and lightweight. I will keep the 17-28 on most of the time and then swap to the 12-24 if I need somethkng wider. Having two fairly compact, lightweight, and high IQ lenses that cover 12-28mm is nice. Weight for these two lenses is just ~100g more than the new Sigma 14-24 for Sony, and there is no 12-14 or 24-28mm focal lengths, no filters, and poor sunstars.

I really liked my 12-24, it’s a special lens and a selling point for the Sony system. That said, I’ve swapped it for the 17-28. f/2.8 is a nice side benefit, but mainly I wanted to go back to my 100mm filter system and found that I could live with losing some of the wide range in exchange. I’d love a 16-35GM but it’s much heavier and over 2x the price so it’s an easy call to get the Tamron. I may eventually supplement with a wide prime if someone ever makes my dream, slow 14mm lens that takes front filters.

Once Tamron completes their trio of zooms, which is looking to happen pretty soon, that’s going to be a very compelling set. Will Sony respond? I have to imagine their f/2.8 GM trio and f/4 G trio are losing quite a bit of sales to Tamron.

While I have not taken many side by side comparison photos, the 12-24 seems to reproduce better colors compared to the Tamron. This is subjective but maybe still calls for an in-depth side by side comparison! I will do some tests when I have time post my findings.

Thanks Jordan - as always a great review! I love the consistency of your reviews!

I think the high contrast of this lens is its strength and is also its weakness. Meaning that this lens is sharp, very sharp, but its higher contrast may hinder separation of some of the finer shades and nuances of color separation. So while I think this lens gives the biggest bang for the buck it will not deliver the biggest bang! But for less than $1000 dollars I doubt you will ever be able to purchase better.

The question now is how much in terms of cost and weight is that extra 5-10% worth to you? I would love to see some side-by-side comparisons of this lens to the new Sigma 14-24 at their common FL's. Patience, patience. . . it should all happen in the fulness of time!

Has anyone switched over from the 16-35 f2.8 GM? Interested in downsizing my kit and this could help a bit. I'm very weary of these online review claiming that it is sharper than the 16-35 GM, but would happily purchase if that is actually the case. The deterrent right now is sample variation. Some are saying that their corners are soft in comparison to the 16-35 2.8 and other wides.

Great review, Jordan. For me, the bokeh generally isn't something that matters since I'm planning to use this mostly as a landscape lens. I do find the bokeh in closeup shots at least is decent.

I would agree that the Sigma 14-24 and 16-35GM are likely to be better optically, at least in nuanced ways. But it's hard to compete with the pragmatism of much lower cost and weight. Tamron has achieved something very special with this lens.

Just returned home. A snapshot from the trip. The Tam17-28 rarely left the Riii. On occasion I'd use the 28-75, and even more rarely the 70-300G.

B&H received a shipment but I am not sure if it was enough to show as available. My order from August 19 was charged to my credit card last night and shows a status of in stock and sent to warehouse.

A few pictures from SF not posted from the FE images thread.

The sunstars will do in a pinch, decent starting at f/14 a bit better at f/22 but you don't have to take as much a diffraction hit.

In Alaska for the past 3+ weeks.
As predicted the 17-28 hardly left the Riii.
We rented a campervan in Anchorage and over the time there had many campsites with
nice views.
This was our campsite view in Haines Ak.
