A buoyant, happy-looking duck that abruptly vanishes and resurfaces as it feeds, the tiny Bufflehead spends winters bobbing around in bays, estuaries, reservoirs, and lakes. Males are striking black-and white from a distance, but a closer look at the head in good light shows glossy green and purple! Females are a subdued gray-brown with a white patch on the cheek.

Bufflehead nest in old woodpecker holes, particularly those made by Northern Flickers, in the forests of northern North America.

Unlike most ducks, the Bufflehead is mostly monogamous, often remaining with the same mate for several years.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, they are fairly shy in the water, and very fast flyers.

Awesome set, I love the background in #1 and I love the iridescence of the feathers in #3. I feel like #3 gives you the most neutral look at their plumage. #6 is fantastic too as a behavior shot, thanks for sharing these!
