I live and farm east of Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock is on the southern part of the Texas Panhandle on the Llano Estacado. This area is very flat with farmland running as far as the I can see. The land is dotted with playa lakes and get Geese, Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese and others winter here every year.
A couple of days ago, I went to a town about 15 miles away from my farm for business and ran into a field of milo that had thousands of Sandhill Cranes feeding. There also was playa lakes on this 640 field of milo. Later that same day I went back and got some photos hoping to show the sheer numbers of these birds.
Today, we went back again with my focus on a different task and that was to get more Sandhill Cranes in flight. We took some friends with us this time with the promise of a steak dinner in another small town another 20 miles down the road. When we got to the milo field they dropped me off on the west side of the field. I walked out into the field about 200 yards. I sat down but didn't take long to realize the birds could still see me even though I was wearing camo that has worked very well in the past. Once I layed down in the field they would fly closer but still veer off when they got closer.
Below are images from both days.
