While it is true that male adult snowy owls are near white, juvenile males look like females - that is to say they have spots. When younger owls are pushed out of territory up north in winter, we often see them much further south. During the last major irruption year here in south western British Columbia, I did not see a single adult male. We had close to 30 snowies here that year.
