A gibbous moon is defined as between a half and full moon. And frankly I prefer photographing it that way because it brings out surface texture of craters, etc. The prominent crater at the bottom left is Tycho crater (85m in diameter and over 15,700 ft deep). Can you imagine the size of an asteroid impacting this crater?
The middle dark area on the right is Mare Tranquilitatis (Sea of Tranquility) where the first American lunar landing touched down.
