p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · How and how often do you clean the sensor?

I do a real cleaning of the sensor when it's time to do it, and that's generally every 2 months. I find the VSCO swabs and their liquid very good and easy to use also on difficult spots.
Between the deep cleanings I generally use the rocket blower on sensor and rear of lenses.
I do change often lenses, and also in not friendly environments.

I now clean the sensor before every job which is almost every day.

I use a solution as dry cleaning (blowing) doesn't remove oils and such.

I've become fed up with most solutions available, too sticky or leave smears, so made my own.

I'd have to link to two products and I'm not sure it that is allowed? If it is, I'll happily do it and show you how I mix them, why, how I clean the sensor etc.

The two products are made by a company we supply photographic services to, they don't make product for cameras, but they do have these two products I combine to make what I think is the best sensor cleaner I've ever used.

I did speak to their chemist and he gave me the advice to use the solution.
It's been 5 years or more now and zero issues.

Rocket blower every night, or if I get back from somewhere I know I've changed lenses a few times in less-than-ideal conditions. I also take a rocket blower to the mount and rear elements of lenses. Haven't encountered any dust spots.

I wet cleaned my old camera once in a blue moon but haven't had a reason to clean current one since rocket blower regimen.

Totally. It doesn't help that I'm often at f/8-13 for video, but if I know I'm going to be shooting video, I'll blow first, check the evf against a blue sky at a small aperture and repeat if necessary. Good luck getting rid of sensor dust in Premiere. NIGHTMARE.

Sometimes before I go out shooting or if I can see a spot on the LCD. I try not to obsess about it and I confess to being a bit cavalier about changing lenses, but I don't mind cloning a few dust spots out of the sky if I need to. That said, shooting video with a mirrorless camera is a different story, and I have always been more meticulous when filming outdoors. Cloning spots out of a moving shot is obviously much more challenging.

I wash it after every photo shoot. It seems to me that this affects the image quality. In general, cleanliness in everything and everywhere is essential for the convenience of work and a comfortable atmosphere. Even in my office, I try to clean up constantly.
But still, it does not save from stagnant stains, so I order cleaning services. The guys from this company will make the room shine whatever type of flooring you have. That's why I always trust them.
Do you often clean the room? I wonder if I'm the only one who likes cleanliness or not.

I like Matt Granger's method:

In 30,000 shots over 10 years I have not had to clean my sensors. I run the shaker every time I turn the camera off, but that is all. I have seen what look like a few faint oil spots but these are only apparent at +f16 and pixel peeping. I do take care when changing lenses. Local shop cleans for $100 a go.

I simply look at the sensor to see any dust - if there is none I’m done. Blowing into the sensor cavity adds as much dust as it gets rid of. If i do blow I use my mouth to blow across the lens mount and pull anything out of the sensor cavity first. Then look again, etc.

To clean I use the Power-X wet swabs - there’s two for different uses. I love the way the wet swab cleans the whole sensor and air dries immediately. It takes a session or two to get the best ‘swipe’ but the sensor is super clean afterwards.

I only clean when needed, BTW.

You shoot Sony or something else? And I hope not shooting f1.2, f1.4 like I used to. Sony cameras are a dust magnet and shaker thing doesn't do nothing for me. On my Canon and now Fuji I rarely clean sensors.

I only clean the sensor if I can see a spot on there or in the images - First by rocket blower & that usually suffices. If it remains, I usually just leave it unless it's really noticeable in images and/or a pain to clone out.

I guess the usual aperture you tend to shoot with also influences this - I tend to shoot bigger so....

I've had my A7 about 6/7 years and if I were to guess, I'd say I've only wet cleaned it about half a dozen times.

I've never had to clean the sensor (okay, maybe once) on my old 2013 Sony NEX-6, which I still use frequently, but dust is a huge issue on my Sony A7iii. I now use a rocket blower whenever I change lenses and even that doesn't do enough most of the time if I'm shooting at smaller apertures (higher f-stops). I do wet cleanings when the blower isn't adequate.

I shoot Canon 6D and R6. Before that 7D and XTi. All the same, that shaker thing works. I shoot wildlife and trains all around 1/1000th and f8, auto ISO. My friends have older Sonys but I have never heard them complain about dust on their sensors.

Necroing a pretty old thread here.

Anyway - I only do it when it's dirty. Not dirty? Not gonna clean it. How can I tell if it's dirty? Pretty obvious for me. I can look at the sensor or I can look at the resulting photos. There's no real reason to clean otherwise. Usually the visual check on the sensor is more than sufficient.

Dust has never been an issue for me but have been both with A9 and A7RIV.

Rocket blower for me as well.

Cheers

George
