Curious about the next lens to add.

Currently have a D750 with 50mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 FL ED VR.

I shoot mostly sports but do love landscape shooting as well.

Thanks in advance!

Assuming you mean the Nikon 17-35 vs. 14-24: The 17-35 is olde-timey and needs a redesign pretty badly. The 14-24 will match the imaging performance of your existing Nikon zooms way, way better. BTW, I have what I believe to be a good copy of each. Shooting both on D800.
I have no experience with the various Sigma and other aftermarket 14-24s and 17-35s.

I would get a 12mm. Like a 12-24mm.

So many possibilities for wide angle! You might want to try a prime to get you started. You have 24mm in your zoom so I suggest trying the Nikon 20mm 1.8. It's a good value and it tends to work well for most of my (standard) wide-angle stuff. I also have the 18-35mm but I seldom use it now that I have the 20mm.

If you are out and want to save a bit of weight the new Tokina 17-35mm 2.8-4 could be a great solution. It is leight, very good optically and still quite affordable.

The Nikon 14-24mm is one of the best lenses made.....bar none. Get that and don't look back.

The Tamron G2 15-30 2.8 is an amazing lens. I have the Nikon 16-35 F/4 as I needed one with VR and one that could accept screw on filters. I bought it used off a local Pro that barely used it.

It's my primary lens now, while I wish it was a 2.8. Optically, it's fantastic. Click my IG link to see my shots from the weekend with it.

Also, the Nikon 14-24---based on past performance--- will never cease to accurately auto focus because of firmware updates to the camera body. I prefer the look of the Zeiss primes(more punchy color and contrast), but don't want to carry a Zeiss 15/2.8, 18/2.8, and 21/2.8 when the Nikon 14-24 covers the same focal lengths with similar resolution.

The real question that nobody is asking, or answering, is this: Do you want a portable, travel-ready wide-angle lens that you can pop in your bag and use occasionally, or do you want a flagship-grade, beast of a lens so that you can get very seriously into shooting at such ultra-wide focal lengths, and make that a key part of your style?

Because, quite honestly, those two "extremes" are very far apart.

The 14-24, and all the other ultra-wide zooms that go wider than 16mm or 17mm, have a massive front element that you can't easily cover with a standard filter, and you'll have to buy a relatively large and cumbersome clamp-on filter system instead. Lenses like the Nikon 16-35 f/4 or the (new) Tamron 17-35, on the other hand, accept front filters, and the Tamron in particular is extremely portable compared to the others.

They're all ridiculously sharp, by the way, especially if you're shooting landscapes stopped down anyways.

(Don't bother with the Nikon 17-35, by the way; it's worse than the Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR, even when it's stopped down to f/4 or 5.6.)

So, ask yourself that first question, (and be very sure you know the answer, too) and then you'll know which lens to get.

Or, of course, you could just trade in your D750 for a Z6, and get the 14-30mm f/4. :-D

I had the 14-24 for 3+ years as my only lens when I had a Nikon. It is a great lens, no doubt. However it isn't the sharpest wide angle out there any longer. Corner sharpness is not good, although focus blend will eliminate this.

I have a buddy that bout the Tamron 15-30 VC2 and he says it is in a different class than the 14-24. I have even found my old Contax 35-70 to be sharper overall than my 14-24 was. Doesn't seem possible, but it is! Perhaps my copy of the 35-70 was from Dr Erhard Glatzel's personal collection

It really comes down to some practical questions, I think. Do you need to go all the way to the shortest focal length, or is it a "because it is there" sort of inclination? The 17-35mm range probably has more utility, even though it partly overlaps your existing lenses.

Tough call!

A newly redesigned 17-35/2.8 is the nirvana lens of Nikon users. Apparently, Canon folks have theirs in the new 16-35/2.8 III. Maybe Sigma could make a new 17-35/2.8 to modern hi-res standards?

I've had the Nikon 17-35mm, 16-35mm, and only my one copy of the Nikon 14-24mm

The 17-35mm comes in a nice hard leather case as Nikon used to do. Takes 77mm filters. But, it is old school. An adequate lens, will squeak on you occasionally, and then people will tell you "the motors failing!" (which it isn't), but these days the lens is nothing exceptional. But decent for landscapes.

I actually had four different copies / attempts at liking the 16-35mm f/4 VR. Just never warmed up to the lens. Nothing really wrong with it, and it does take 77mm filters, just not for me. I'd buy on sale, for around $850 (during the holidays), and then sell again a few months later. Some other landscape photographers I know really like it though. It's smaller, lighter than the 14-24mm and also has VR.

I've bought only one copy of the 14-24mm and have had it since 2008. One of the lenses I'll never sell until I get out of photography. It has a few flaws, but the lens, in general, will surpass 95% of the landscape photographers skill levels. I just don't use as much as I used to because I'm not that into ultra wide angle images right now, preferring a different 24mm lens.

The 14-24mm lenses do come up on sale fairly often, often in "as new" shape. That's what I'd look for, to save money, unless you like new, the full warranty, etc. etc. But I prefer Nikon lenses, not the alternatives.

Maybe the 2020 14-24mm f/2.8 "Z" lens release will be even better!

What I found with the D3 12MP camera was that there was a noticeable difference in image quality with my wide angle zoom lenses and I would rate them in this order:

14-24mm f/2.8
18-35mm f/3.5G
16-35mm f/4
17-35mm f/2.8

All are good lenses for digital cameras with CA not an issue with these "modern" lenses. I have owned all four and currently have the 14-24mm and the 18-35mm. Advantage of the 18-35mm is its use of standard screw on 77mm size filters.
