I like the progression of Sony, and the maturity of lenses from them and other companies for the mirrorless FX cameras. But in having both an A7 and A7II absolutely HATED how slow and clunky the camera was in general and how convoluted the menu's.were (cheap feeling)

Has this been MUCH improved in the A7III and A7RIII For the pricetag, you would think so, but was NOT impressed with the A7II vs the A7, same slow clunky camera...

Has the III series changed all that ALSO Battery life, was dismal, still

Yes, here's a link comparing the a9, r3 to the r2. everything feels faster and more polished, no more waiting around for the image to write to card. the shutter action even feels faster/snappier when i compare my r3 to my old r2. Play with one in a store or rent one but be ready to sell your a7II

Not sure what you mean by "slow and clunky". I never had a problem with the A7ii menu system. Yes it could be better, but never had a problem with it.

With that said, everyone's perspective on this will be different. Best thing to do is just go to your nearest electronic retailer or camera store, and play around with the menu's and see if it meets your expectations.

In addition to performance differences, the RIII controls/buttons feel beefier than the RII

I think the A7 was an abomination.... whoever placed the shutter button in that location needs to have their hands broken. The A7ii was a massive improvement in ergonomics but it still was not very good. In terms of performance, they were both pretty lack luster in my opinion. The A7iii is in a whole different league. The ergonomics are good. Not canon or nikon good but not i want to kill the designer bad. To call that a massive improvement is an understatement. The A7iii has superior IQ, superior low light, superior autofocus, superior video, superior battery and dual card slots. So yes, to answer your question this A7iii is a massive improvement in every way. ( I am not going to say the same thing about the A7rii and the A7riii)

Thank you, exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for. I am not near a camera store to test for myself, so appreciate the info.

The overly sensitive EVF sensor on the A72 caused me to sell the entire kit and leave Sony after raging while trying to use the camera at waste or lower level.

I did my research heavily before trying Sony again and went with R3, but 3 is also a big leap. Much improved

I owned the A7 II for three years and have been shooting with the A7 III since April. It's a huge step up. Image quality gets a nice boost, especially in low light, but the AF is the star. It's a massive upgrade in AF capabilities, with EyeAF and hugely improved lower light AF.

My biggest comparison point was Christmas morning. On my A7 II AF was often a challenge in the dim light in our living room, and moving and excited kids. I got many good shots, but also missed a lot.

With the III, I think I missed focus exactly once. Every single shot locked on the eyes, and locked quick, with the same low light conditions.

My full review of the A7 III here compares to the older model a fair bit :https://admiringlight.com/blog/review-sony-a7-iii/

Hi,
I've both A7R II and A7R III and I can confirm, as others stated, that there's a huge improvement, not as much in the output quality of photos since A7RII delivers amazing pics, but in the general rensponsiveness of the camera, A7R III is much quicker about everything, above all AF, Eye Af etc

In any case I kept the A7R II because of the apps and because for landscape photos it's just perfect, so I usually use both cameras together, A7R III is more for action or wildlife

From what I gather the A7iii is much improved over the A7ii - The A7ii & A7 are too close to warrant an upgrade between them imo.

I have an A7 btw
