So if I understand, you use the RAVPower as a portable Wifi hub and connect your camera to it using wifi and ftp? It's not clear but does the RAVPower have storage at all, or does it require a card or external drive to work? It's unclear what the one button backup is for.

Yes, that's right. No local storage on the hub. Its a wifi hub and external power bank too! Plug SD card into the hub and plug external drive too. Connect to the mobile/tablet via 2.4 or 5Ghz hotspot with the hub. Also access Wifi on your device for up to five devices while maintaining the hotspot with the hub.

The one touch backup button allows for SD card backup to the connected external drive. Perfect for on the go laptopless operations/workflow. The hub is small for easy pack and carry.

Citation:

With the fw 5.00 update, Lock-on AF has been replaced by Real Time Tracking.

Lock-on AF uses three factors to track focus:
Color | Distance | Face

Real Time Tracking uses five factors to track focus:
Color | Pattern | Distance | Face | Eye

Real Time Tracking processing and analyzes these five factors in real time to provide the most accurate Continuous AF. Ever. As a portrait photographer, my favorite new feature is that you no longer need to Press & Hold a Custom Button to activate Eye

In the meantime we can use touch pad focus to finger drag a nicely highlighted focus point while looking through the EVF or at the LED. Little different than the joy stick but easy to adjust and works very well.

Great job, Sony, giving updates!

Now we just need focus bracketing/stacking features!

Fred, I just worked out a workflow this morning to get raws to my iPhone using FTP

1. On your iPhone, Install the free version of the FE File Explorer (AppStore link)

2. Run the FE File Explorer app and start its FTP server by clicking on the WiFi icon at the bottom of the page. If you're phone is currently connected to a router then both the phone and camera will use that network, otherwise you can create an adhoc network on the phone by using the phone's Personal Hotspot feature.

3. On the camera, configure the WiFi settings to connect to

Can I bother you to clarify something, since I’ve never tried this before? Camera is asking for “Host Name”, “Port” and “Directory.” Which of those is the IP address?

Host name is either a DNS name like a website (that resolves to an IP address) but can also be the IP address itself
Port is usually 21 for FTP but if you're using the FE FileExplorer app it defaults to 2121 instead
Directory is where the files will be placed on the FTP server. That path is relative to the base path configured on the FTP server itself. For example if the FTP base directory for a user is c:\tempfiles then an empty Directory for the camera field will put the files in c:\tempfiles.

It was said that the eye-AF is only used all the time, if face detection is switched on (read Brian Smiths impression I linked to above). So the solution is simple, switch it off and you get the standard behaviour,

Brian Smith says that you no longer NEED to press and hold a button, but he doesn't state expressly that you can use the old way either.

I asked him directly my question in the comment section, and his answer is... cryptic :

He shows a menu setting called "Face/Eye Detection":
"Once you enable Face/Eye Detection in the menu, Eye AF is on whenever AF is active. This includes half-press of shutter button or full-press of Back-Button AF."
I heard this elsewhere, too. I bet you can still assign that to a custom button or Custom Recall Hold.

I will wait for the firmware update.

He said "Eye AF and Face Detection are linked and they are amazing."
For me this makes sense and implies, that switching this face/eye-detection off results in standard focus mode use.
In addition, certain functions can be programmed to buttons. I am sure that you can program eye-detection to a button separately.
I can imagine, too, that Recall Custom Hold will get this new function as a checkbox, for programming your own focus mode to AF-On, if you want to.

The fastest way to switch face detection off right now is with a custum button : then you have to choose on, off, or registered faces (or whatever it's called in english). So if I want to switch from face AF to standard focus mode, it implies several clicks.

But right now, switching from eye-AF to standard focus mode doesn't imply this. You either press your Eye af button or you don't.

What will it be when face Af and eye Af will be just one function ? I really hope that Recall Custom Hold will get this face/eye AF as a checkbox with the new firmware, because now it's not the case.

If you watch Patrick Murphy-Racey's video on the firmware 5.0, at 3:44 you can see eye-AF being still an option for button customisation in the menu.

The new mode is explained at 9:24, where you can see that focus area gets a new menu item called Tracking: Fleixible Spot.
The "spider monkey" setting is called Tracking expand flexible spot.
So you have the possibility to deselect that and use the old mode.

From my seat that was one very good telling video. You all know how I feel about some of these reviews but I do like his stuff. That’s rare for me.

I actually meant Focus Bracketing, since I prefer to stack in post. Olympus does both of these, as well, and are a good reference, since their method works nicely. They do both bracketing and in camera stacking.

While I appreciate the flexibility, Sony's solution shown in the video is a good example of why so many people don't like Sony menus. The powerful features are hidden in convoluted corners and there's no clear indication of what they do or where to find them. Seems like the "pattern recognition" aspect should just be enabled for every tracking mode (what's the downside?) and the face/eye tracking should be enabled separately like they do now. Maybe I'll feel differently after playing with the new mode.

Thanks! This seemed like it would be a good tool, but for whatever reason it simply won’t transfer to my iPhone or iPad. It’s creating a folder for the transfer since I’ve found a dozen from my attempts, but it aborts the transfer after two seconds. I’ll keep playing around, but thanks for bringing this app to our attention.
