Can't you do the same thing in post processing on your workstation? I'd much prefer a colour calibrated large screen monitor if I'm going to do any "real" processing of the image. I don't get what processing the raws in camera buys you?

I think we are able to do similar in-camera image editing before you fire the shutter in A7x cameras but maybe only with jpgs w/ Creative Style settings

The ability to process a raw when you don't have access to your workstation.

The big question for me is now how well adapted lenses will be able to keep up with the new RT Tracking AF. My take is, for sure it will not do as well as a native FE lens but it will do better than the existing FW of the A9. I will take any AF improvement over the existing FW as a bonus.

Now, Sony, don't you think that it is about time for you to announce the 600mm GM lens? Or, I would even take a 500mm GM lens with less reach but lighter. Either or and I am in!

I understand that...but for what benefit over a jpeg? I can access my images off my camera onto my phone and use much better image processing to process the file.

The 600 was on my mind too! I get the sense that since the 400 worked out so well 500/600 can't be too far behind.

The same benefits of shooting raw over jpeg but using the camera instead of a workstation. And most camera's don't let you wirelessly transfer raws to your phone to manipulate.

You can absolutely do the same thing on a workstation. But the whole point is to not have to go to a workstation if you don't want/need to, or just can't get to one.

Also, you can definitely transfer JPEGs to mobile device on the Sony bodies. However, you are now tweaking a Sony JPEG as opposed to the RAW file itself. Think curve and color edits as being the ones requiring more latitude than you can get out of a JPEG.

With in-camera processing, you can choose a film sim, adjust curves, white balance/color shift, grain, sharpness, noise reduction etc. You can make completely different looks with the same files after the fact and it can all be done fairly painlessly in-camera.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying all images get finished this way. But for about 85% of my shots, I'm perfectly fine with the process. It is only when I need to mask or make other more localized edits where I would really have to go to a workstation.

Also, the RAW processing system/engine in the cameras are optimized for editing and conversion so there is very little lag in the process. Everything is pretty snappy. If we ever get confirmation that RAWs can be transferred to mobile for editing on something like an iPhone, I bet the process of editing a Sony RAW file will not be anywhere near as swift as a built-in/optimized processing engine.

You can absolutely process Sony RAWs on an iPhone or iPad, you just need an intermediate step to get it to the phone right now. I use Lightroom cc on the iPhone all the time for on the go editing of RAWs.

Lightroom mobile on a modern iPhone works just as well as lightroom on the desktop speed wise, although there are far less options and it is more cumbersome to use because of the touch interface.

Version 6.0 will have animal eye AF on the A9. That will be awesome for wildlife. I hope both firmware upgrades will work well with MC-11/Metabones adapted lenses. Both adapters may need updates . . . We’ll see.

I suppose it is too much to ask for it to lock onto BIF but I imagine that's coming.

Heck it might get so easy we can set a motion timer on a automatic gimble that tracks birds and just stay home and send the wife out to swap out the SD card each morning. She could cull all the stinkers before I get out of the Lazy Boy to polish up the good ones.

I am single BTW but isn't that how it works?

While true that you can process this way, it is also true that it is cumbersome at best.

For those that haven't had a chance to experience the Fuji in-camera processing, I can say that it is the quickest and easiest way for me to get finished images I am happy with. As an example, I can go to a school event for my kids and shoot 150-200 images. I can cull, edit, and have finished JPEGs from the entire shoot in about 15-20 minutes.

Once you are familiar with the process, it is very fast to get through with several clicks here and there plus wifi transfer to device. With LR mobile, it is a much slower process to cull and deal with many more erroneous editing entries on something like an iPhone which is precisely why I process all of my Sony files on a computer instead.

Takes me a couple of minutes to transfer and edit the images I want to send off. I can use either LR or Snapseed to do my editing...both very powerful applications.

So once you do this processing on the camera...then what? Do you transfer to your phone to send out?

For any serious work, it's to my workstation with full colour calibration process...something that just is not possible on the phone or in the camera.

I guess I'm still lost what one gains in setting up these processing parameters in the camera versus sending to a phone and using a powerful image processing application.

Can you not just batch process the same 200 images in LR on your workstation when you get home in that same amount of time?

If I'm not mistaken, you're still referring to transferring JPEGs and then editing in LR or Snapseed?

Again, you'd have to get home first. The whole point is to be able to do everything on the fly and be free of a workstation when it isn't absolutely necessary. You could literally do this anywhere and never touch a computer.

I don't disagree with you. There are plenty of images or serious work that I would definitely want to edit on a workstation. But there are plenty more images I'm perfectly content with doing it the other way.

And Fuji is known for their quality, nearly finished and not needing much tweaking, JPEG files. Sony isn't.

You're in a Sony thread. No one is disputing Fuji's workflow but it doesn't apply here.

I'm glad processing your RAWs on a computer works for you. Me too! I also enjoy editing RAWs on the go. If I'm posting travel updates from remote locations, I sure ain't lugging a laptop around with me, I'm editing and posting from the road the next day on my iDevice.

And what does "automatic" mean? I hope it means closest eye to the camera. Except in rare circumstances, who would always want the left eye, or always the right?

Sony overcomplication, closest eye, keep it simple. What's needed is a quick way to toggle people's eyes when using the evf, there should be a quicker way to toggle when multiple people are in the frame.

Hi Scott,
What's your intermediate step to get ARW files into your phone?

I get that I'm on a Sony thread. However, the tangent was in a thread about a major FW update where we began to talk about omitted additions and/or valuable ones that could be added moving forward. Definitely not trying to inject any Fuji-ness in here but it is my reference point for in-cam processing. I'd just like to potentially see this added to both of my Sony bodies.

looks really cool, but I'm content with sending jpegs direct to iphone and use iphone's built in editor. I feel it does fine for social media posts. Have you tried it?

I know editing jpegs can be poison to photographers

I do the same for video, often, I set 1080 60 as my default, simply because I can integrate with iphone clips really fast without going home. I can bang out a video in minutes, complete with slo motion b-roll, however, audio tracks I usually have to pick out in advance and have on my phone/ipad.

I really like the Fuji film simulations. I’ve thought about getting a Fuji just because of that, but don’t want to deal with two systems.

Even the images I process on my phone get reprocessed when I get home. I know I can do a much better job processing images on my workstation, so if an image is worth processing, I will take the time and process it to my best abilities...or it will be deleted.

Maybe our views are different as we might be taking different types of images for different purposes.
