And what does "automatic" mean? I hope it means closest eye to the camera. Except in rare circumstances, who would always want the left eye, or always the right?

Looks like Auto might mean Eye AF switches dynamically to the left or right eye. Maybe as you wrote based upon which eye is closest or perhaps most visible. See example footage here: https://youtu.be/QCXJPEXISHE @ 23:12

Version 6.0 will have animal eye AF on the A9. That will be awesome for wildlife. I hope both firmware upgrades will work well with MC-11/Metabones adapted lenses. Both adapters may need updates . . . We’ll see.

Of course they're getting closer, second by second.
But I doubt Sony will continue using the two year schedule. The A7SII is over three years old, and still no SIII. Maybe we'll get the RIV in late 2020.

"Auto" will use the eye closest to the camera per Patrick Murphy in the video you posted previously. Look at 2:54:

Hmm... I don't suppose one of the new features for the A7 firmware upgrades is a focus box that isn't dark grey?

In all the excitement...I almost forgot about that one myself 👀

Okay, animal eye-AF on Sony a9 gets me excited, time to consider a change or a hybrid shooter.

Hopefully this is Sony deciding that with Nikon and Canon in the ring, they really need to keep customers happy and show potential customers that they are invested in their current line up, not just pushing out new bodies. I am looking forward to the a7riii update.

There will be new mobile apps as well:

1) Transfer & Tagging Add-on Mobile app (professional use...)
Perhaps A9 only?

2) Imaging Edge Mobile app (Easily transfer photos & videos automatically to mobile device in the background)
Jpeg only or RAW support as well?

The Imaging Edge Desktop app will create time lapses now. Sony A9, A7R III and A7 III will get a new built-in intervalometer. Finally! Now we just need a built-in "image averaging" app similar to SR.

I think it's that and a signal of longer product cycles.

Still I expect an a9x at some point. I could see that camera being the flagship. I could also see its introduction being the end of the a7r line.

I think Sony is underestimating how many 60-80mpx sensors they could sell.

I kept waiting for a smooth reflections announcement during the broadcast, Fred. We'll keep waiting I guess...

I think it's a technology issue. The A9 pushed the envelope in getting 1/150 sensor readout rates, which is what gives it both a usable electronic shutter for action and also much faster AF. That's a lot harder to do with a higher MP sensor.

Perhaps they are not going there yet because their current tech is unable to maintain or improve DR + SNR compared to what's already available on the A7RIII. Having said that, I'm sure high megapixel sensors are already being developed for a future release.

Software ver.3.0 for Alpha A7R III and Alpha A7 III

Sony’s popular A7R III and A7 III full-frame cameras will both receive enhanced Real-time Eye AF performance with new version 3.0 software. This will be available in AF-C mode with a simple half-press of the shutter button. Real-Time Eye AF for animalsi will also be available.

Additionally, the cameras will receive interval recording functionality that will allow for the very simple creation of time-lapse movies[vii]. The new feature can be set for anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. AE tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted to ‘High’, ‘Mid’ or ‘Low during interval recording, allowing for reduced changes in exposure over the shooting interval.

The new version 3.0 system software update is scheduled for April 2019.

It looks like Playmemories Mobile will be replaced by a new app called Imaging Edge Mobile.

We will probably see more "Add-on" mobile applications for ‘Imaging Edge Mobile’. The first is called Transfer and Tagging Add-on.

Yep, here's Sony's press release about it:

No spatial filtering switch...
I took some shots at the beach as the light faded and forgot to switch to continuous (A7RII) when going over 3.2s.
Everyone should do the same test with a scene containing textured rock or sand.
Shoot at say 1s and then as the light drops take another at 10s and then compare them.

I wonder if this means that the A7 bodies will get the same updates in other areas of AF as the A9? The pattern and color recognition thing to go along with the new "tracking" which seems to be seperate from lock-on. Too much terminology to keep up with.

A7R AF system is quite a bit different than the A9/A73, so probably not.
