I think those days are long gone. I've got 5 lenses with 55mm filter threads:
Minolta 24/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 58/1.4 & Leica 50/1.4
and found them great in size & weight compared to modern lenses. I wish there could be more of a medium in terms of size/cost trade off.
There was this thread: Any thoughts on weight of the upcoming rumored sony 135 1.8?, where I highlighted the classic triple constraint:
- IQ quality and/or max aperature;
- size and/or weight;
- cost;
and how modern lenses sacrifice size (relative to older lenses) to improve quality (relative to older lenses) while maintaining costs (relatively).
Presumably lenses, in general, could be designed to improve quality and maintain size, but at huge cost to a level that would become uneconomic....Show more →
I think the 24mm and 400mm show that Sony has the technology to make lenses with very high image quality and still keep size and weight low relative to the competition. The 24mm isn't crazy expensive compared to the Canon or Nikon options. I think $2,000 is getting to the psychological price ceiling that many people have when it comes to a premium prime lens that is pretty specialized. I think Zeiss hit this with the Batis 135mm.
It will be hard to make the 135mm F/1.8 much smaller than the Sigma without introducing vignetting and cat's eye bokeh. Hopefully they prove me wrong, but if they do it will be an expensive lens.
