Sony can look at the Sigma 105mm & 135mm ART lenses, and they can look at the Nikon 105mm and Batis 135mm. The bar for a new 100mm and 135mm GM lens is set pretty high. Sony did a really good job making the 24mm and the 400mm GM lenses light weight. Hopefully that carries over to these lenses. I think having a 100mm SFT at F/2.8 and a 100mm F/1.4 makes a lot of sense.

I agree. A 100 1.4 makes sense and it puts Sony marketing in a better place.

Btw my wife’s company or I should say me bought a new MacBook Air it’s really nice for small work but I bought the new space grey mouse for a 100 bucks. Yea rip off price but it’s far better than the old apple mouse. They come in white for 79 but highly recommend it . Actually it’s a 100 percent better

The Sony GM line's rendering seems to be one of the priorities in the design process. I truly think the 24/1.4 and 85/1.4 GM lenses have beautiful rendering which sets them apart when compared to other lenses in their class.

Nikon has a winner with their 105/1.4 but something that bothers me is the high mechanical vignetting (cat-eye bokeh). I think it's much more difficult to get that under control in a 105mm lens compared to a 85mm and it's one of the reasons I love the 85/1.4 GM. Hopefully Sony will figure this out with their new 105 and 135mm lenses.

I tried to annotate dimension in patent images based on assumption that sensor diagonal is displayed, but front element size ended up too small so assumption was not correct. Front element should be at least 135/1.8=75mm for 135 and 100/1.4=71.4mm for the 100 plus some margin on both, because element edges are occluded). Still the 135 it looks quite smaller than Sigma 135.

What I find interesting is that both designs are very similar and they are also similar to Sony 85gm.

It is also interesting that the aperture blades are very close the front (compared to Sigma 105/1.4 or Sigma 135/1.8). I guess that allows to have lower mechanical vignetting without overly big front element.

You have been hearing noises coming from the rumor mills. There is no real report about one coming up soon. If you do, please provide the link or links. I hope I am wrong though.

If Sony just registered a patent for a 135mm f/1.8 lens, unless there is another design that Sony patented already quite some time ago, then there is no way that Sony would be able to introduce an FE 135mm f/1.8 GM lens within a year. I hope I am wrong though...

I wouldn't be surprised if there are several patents for both a 135/1.8 FE and a 100/1.4 FE. This since they are likely to do design studies to investigate properties and feasibilty of different design approaches.

Are the surfaced patents marked with any dates?

There’s a lot of people with red faces who have been hold8ng their breath for the Sony 135 F1.8. Meanwhile, I continue to shoot with my E mount Sigma 135mm F1.8.

One thing’s for sure the Sony won’t be cheaper than the Sigma. Maybe a little bit lighter and maybe a little sharper but not much since the Sigma is already so good.

My favorite thing about the Minolta 100/2's build was the diameter of the front filter. 55mm! A 100/1.4 has to be pretty big. A 100/1.8 would be a great compromise. But call me hopefully optimistic.

I really hope this is a sign that the 100mm focal length is coming back. For quite a few years, it wasn't being made much. I believe only Zeiss and Canon had one currently available. If Fuji comes out with a 66/1.4, I may switch back.

That's my point in the post above. Both the Sigma 135mm and the Batis 135mm are both excellent lenses. The bar is set pretty high for Sony, but at least Sony knows what they have to beat. I expect it to be a $2,000 + lens, but how will it be better than the Sigma or Zeiss? It will be hard if not impossible to make it smaller and avoid cat's eye bokeh. I guess they could make an APO 135mm F/1.8 and take the best of the Batis with the speed of the Sigma.

The 24mm GM, 400mm GM, and 135mm GM leaks all came at the same time and so far 2 of them have been released. Maybe the 135mm GM never comes, but I think Sony has one coming soon.

Remember that Sony said they would launch 12 new lenses in 2019. Some of those should be APS-C, but I think a 135mm and a 35mm f/1.8 are pretty high on the list. I would love to see a 200mm prime as well.

Today I came across something interesting. The Sony FE 1.4x TC won't allow the camera to take a picture when mounted on unsupported lenses. (Currently it only works with the 70-200 GM, 100-400 GM and 400/2.8 GM)

This happens even if there is a way for its thick protruding glass to pass through unsupported lenses.

See here:

I do hope they allow the new telephotos to take advantage of the 1.4 and 2.0x teleconverters.

Wish there was a third-party solution for this. I remember in my Canon days you could use a Kenko converter on almost anything.

Sony undoubtedly is working hard on the release of several fast and/or long telephoto and zoom lenses for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. A big question is how many of those will be released in 2019 and how many in the first quarter or be available for the Olympic games in 2020. I would expect at least 2 fast telphotos and 1 long zoom and I expect these may all be in the GM line. Sony doesn't have a lot of time to spare with all of the expected to be released lenses and in particular with only 1 1/2 years to the Olympic games.

Even though the Sigma is a fantastic lens, I predict a lot of Sigma 135/1.8 E-mount lenses going for sale after the Sony release.

I think there is a reason for no third party solutions. It looks like Sony prevents the shutter from being triggered with unsupported lenses. It only works with dumb tubes or adapters.

It seems to me that with a 85GM and a 135 1.8 that you would want to be at little closer to the middle rather than just 15mm longer than 85? Also Sigma has their highly thought of 105 and 105 has been a fairly popular FL over the years.

As far as landscape you already have the 100STF in decent lighting and the 90 macro am I the only person who is puzzled why they would choose 100 ipo 105?

what's an ipo?

I would say that the filing of these patents has about 10% predictive value of a future release and less than 1% predictive value of a announcement coming soon.

However, SAR is fairly confident that there is a blogger, YouTube, press gathering for some new lens and/or camera this week. They are most confident this is the 135/1.8 and a good chance of the high-end APS-C camera and another APS-C lens. Although they aren't confident enough to rank the rumour up at SR4 or SR5.

I think those days are long gone. I've got 5 lenses with 55mm filter threads:
Minolta 24/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 58/1.4 & Leica 50/1.4
and found them great in size & weight compared to modern lenses. I wish there could be more of a medium in terms of size/cost trade off.

There was this thread: Any thoughts on weight of the upcoming rumored sony 135 1.8?, where I highlighted the classic triple constraint:

  1. IQ quality and/or max aperature;
  2. size and/or weight;
  3. cost;

and how modern lenses sacrifice size (relative to older lenses) to improve quality (relative to older lenses) while maintaining costs (relatively).

Presumably lenses, in general, could be designed to improve quality and maintain size, but at huge cost to a level that would become uneconomic.

I think the 24mm and 400mm show that Sony has the technology to make lenses with very high image quality and still keep size and weight low relative to the competition. The 24mm isn't crazy expensive compared to the Canon or Nikon options. I think $2,000 is getting to the psychological price ceiling that many people have when it comes to a premium prime lens that is pretty specialized. I think Zeiss hit this with the Batis 135mm.

It will be hard to make the 135mm F/1.8 much smaller than the Sigma without introducing vignetting and cat's eye bokeh. Hopefully they prove me wrong, but if they do it will be an expensive lens.

Likely mine will be one of them - I guess I can consider the loss taken to be what I would have paid to rent it for several occasions. My only issue with the Sigma is the focus speed, other than that (if you can handle the size/weight) it's pretty fantastic.

Actually, the 135mm Art is very similar size to the A-mount 135mm. Which tells me that's probably about the size we'll get.
