I have mentioned in some prior posts that occasionally three or even four grebes will rush together, rather than the usual two. It is often assumed that rushing involves a male and a female grebe as part of the mating ritual. This is often, maybe even usually, true. But it is also the case that grebes rushing often is multiple males showing off for the females. In this case three grebes start rushing nearly directly at me, then the make a left turn and the third grebe is left behind. He kept rushing even after he was lost from the frame and went down just a second before the other two. The grebe on the right persisted even after going down and moved across the water on his belly before finally turning to declare victory.
