The other morning on Fir Island. #1 500mm f4 with 1.4 extender. #2 300mm f4 no extender (this from a few winters ago).

A common behavior with flocks of geese when they're feeding in the fields is to periodically take off and circle around, landing about where they took off. I understand this is to confuse predators. I frequently see a portion of the flock, maybe twenty percent (and this can be several hundred birds) or so exhibit this behavior then a short time later another small group will do the same. From my observations it's less common for the full flock to do this. Diligence pays off for these types of images as sooner or later when a flock is in the field they will do a fly around.

I really enjoy getting these mass blast off shots. It's best though if they don't fly directly overhead as they evacuate once thy get airborne and I can say from personal experience it's messy and smelly. I've had to do the hunch over the camera/tripod more than once and take the brunt on my hat and jacket. I've learned to keep a change of outer layers in my vehicle when I'm out photographing large flocks of geese.

Yes, a major blast off of snow geese is fun to watch, except from being bombarded with guano

. And the noise of their wing flapping is something else, too. Great images, BTW!

Very nice! Regarding their "evacuation", I know that well, having my car a target once at Bosque. Seems like they ignored every car near me, and blasted mine.

Good ones, Chris. Once I was with my son in my wife's car. He had his window down, an eagle came by, snow geese blast off and a bunch of green "stuff" came flying inside the car all the way over to the driver's side. Don't tell mom.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'm considering ordering a large print of one of my many mass flight images, I think it would look amazing as a mural sized photo.
