I love the images from the 85GM, even preferring them to my Batis 135. The bokeh is far smoother, while also having good contrast and color. The 85GM is slower than the Batis and it痴 little brother 85/1.8 even on the a7r3, though may be improved enough over the r2 for most applications. If it ever goes on a diet, I値l have one.

I posted this one in the FE images thread. It was with the Batis 85; the cat's eyes don't bother me.

I'm really not a monitor of bokeh balls but the Sony 50/1.4 seems to do a'ight.

I don't understand the Sigma 105/1.4. I was tempted when it was first announced, but despite being marketed as a "bokeh master" lens, it still has some bokeh issues. I understand it is sharp and is fast and thus will provide a lot of blur, but I thought the point of the massive front element was to avoid cat eyes. The lens still seems to have prominent cat eyes and onion rings. Seems like if bokeh were the priority, they could have done better especially with the lack of size constraints. Of course, I am no lens designer so what do I know?

I was surprised as well and that's why I posted. The FE 85/1.4 GM has clean bokeh balls and less mechanical vignetting. Not the same focal length but not too different either.
For a longer focal length, it may be worth waiting for the upcoming 135/1.8 GM.

Not to mention the comparatively diminuitive GM 100 STF, which has smooth bekeh, round bokeh balls, and a 72mm front element and is sharp. It is much slower, of course, but all lenses are compromises.

Yes, I would say "bokeh master" is really the STF!

@GMPhotography, that bokeh of the 24mm GM is a dream! Your and @Fred Miranda's (Europe) photos with that lens don't help my pending decision wether to get the 24mm GM + Tamron 28-75mm or just straight the 24-70mm GM (24-70mm GM because of convenience) for my next long trip overseas.

You are going back to the 85mm GM @GMPhotography ? I am glad that I kept mine even though we both had some PM exchanges regarding the grinding and grease issue of the 85mm GM series. It delivers so many great photos in the last years in Venice during the Carnevale di Venezia but that lens is a sloth and not always 100% reliable AF-wise under dimmed light conditions outdoors.

All your Bokeh tests with Christmas light reminds me of that I should do that with my little Contax Zeiss primes collection

@Fred Miranda I tested that SIGMA 105mm ART lens at the photokina in Cologne. Darn that lens delivers photos those are out of the world but it a behemoth size and weight. I can't believe that anyone would like to carry that thing around. I thought the 85mm GM is a beast (downsides: weight, size) but the SIGMA 105mm ART knocks it clearly off.

Yea I知 going back to my AF 1.4 glass. Honestly I hate onion rings and not fond of cats eye either. Soooo I have the Sony 24 and 50 1.4 and I知 going to sell my Batis 85 and get the GM 85 again. I have the Batis 135 also. So really the best primes Sony makes and than I have my MF kit with 4 lenses CV 15,21,40 and Leica 75 summarit. I値l get the GM 85 early next year. Wait till all this holiday stuff is over. I知 done with zooms as I never ever really liked them anyway. But many people do. I maybe called old school and it痴 a good tag on me.

You don't need a Sony A9 to avoid weird bokeh at high shutters speeds. Just use any other camera in silent shutter (electronic shutter) and you won't need to worry about turning off EFCS. This is not a new discovery and has been reported here in the forum more than 3 years ago!

For this Christmas light test, there is no issue since shutter speeds should be below 1/200s.

Will the A9 switch to the mechanical shutter over 1/1000 if set to Auto ?

Unrelated but I wish there was a dedicated 'Silent' mode in the menu too.

Seriously this tests proves one thing for sure. All the 1.4 lenses here the Sony 24 and Sony 50 provided the roundest and onion free bokeh. If I had the GM 85 Im sure it would fall into this group as well
