I’ll take a look . I used the A7rIII

We have already established that with it on it effects Bokeh above 1/1000. Have to see what he is saying

We have lots of samples here on the forum for quite sometime.

Well first off the Christmas tree is well under 1/1000 of a second. To be honest all I’m seeing is the background building contrast and underexposer in that video which give the appearance of losing bokeh. Not so sure your actually losing anything if he added exposure back in to match the histo of the mechanical. I don’t think the background would change at all. You have to level the two exposures to be sure of it and he does not. Worth a test for sure

So my bottom line take on it it’s actually effecting exposure through shutter speed but aperture is not changing. Your in A mode or even manual Aperture is fixed to what is set, only the shutter can change. If those exposures where equaled out there than would be no diffrence. Watch again and watch the exposure drop on the models face. That exposures drop is global so it effects the background. He is only getting cheated of exposure.

Fred has posted numerous examples of the on/off effects over 1/1000 with EFSC on and off I believe it was his 55mm test awhile ago. Maybe he can find that thread. I’ll send him a email to look at what we just talked about.

End of the day we care about the bokeh and not exposure. Most of us are shooting Raw so we make any exposure differences up in post to taste.

It does not matter if shutter speeds are slow. Definitely not an issue shooting Christmas lights.

You don't need a Sony A9 to avoid weird bokeh at high shutters speeds. Just use any other camera in silent shutter (electronic shutter) and you won't need to worry about turning off EFCS. This is not a new discovery and has been reported here in the forum more than 3 years ago!

For this Christmas light test, there is no issue since shutter speeds should be below 1/200s.

Wow, the Opton is pretty interesting. Thanks! (Or maybe not cause now I want one - but definitely don't need one!)😊

Here are few of my prime lenses wide open. Focus distance about 3 feet and lights 12 feet away.

It’s also explained in the A7RIII HELP Guide, page 199.

That video is misleading as it really has nothing to do to bokeh it’s a exposure shift

@GMPhotography I was referring to the texture in the bokeh balls (unless it's from the needles behind the lights).

The Loxia 85/2.4 has no asphericals (so no onion) and has a very pleasant rendering. (minus the cat-eyes)

Sorry I meant the Batis 85. I’ve actually been thinking of going back to the GM 85 since my issues in the past are gone now. Not a priority but like to upgrade at some point..

I’m going back out this morning and test the 50 1.4 some more as that lens seems to be a lot better with AF now..

For the record I had the 50/85 1.4 back with the A7RII and before the updated firmware so I had some AF issues with both lenses that has all since been fixed.

If the Batis 135 is your favorite portrait lens, why would bother getting the 85GM?

It’s a great question. I still have need for a 85 more for like 3/4 shots and tighter. Portraits are from lower chest up and I use the 135 there in studio but outside studio I would do more body shots. Plus I use a 85 for events for stage work. I shoot a lot of corporate work too and I never know what I will run into. My AF kit is 24,50,85,135 and that’s it. So I have a nice range as I never know what what type of jobs come in. I’m not a specialist that only shoots food per say and needs maybe only macros so my range is pretty diverse. Now I always have my MF kit to add lenses to the work kit like my 15,21 if I need to get really wide. I gave up trying to define my kit into 1 kit instead I have 2 complete kits but can tap in on the other depending on need. Say you get a couple shoot well the 135 gets too long but a 85 is perfect for a 3/4 shot and a 50 for full body. Just never know what you run into and working for clients it can change in minutes.

Fair enough. I might not use the 85GM for stage work though,if you mean moving people. It doesn't seem to focus the fastest,(depending on the lighting).

This was my big problem with the GM 85 in the past , slightly different since it was before updated software and the A7rII in use. Now that issue was fixed so I’m going to test my 50 1.4 today as it had the same issues but I want to see the improvements now. If it’s good than maybe I’ll upgrade but it still could be a slow issue because of the massive elements to move in the 85. It maybe smart of me to rent the GM 85 first and see before I do anything. Good news I’m not in a hurry on this and can wait till late January for me. I have the Batis 85 which is quite fast at AF so I’m totally covered. I also had some passing thoughts on the Sigma 105 but that I want to rent first. My Batis 135 is going in my casket with me. It’s going nowhere.
