p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bokeh Balls and Onion Rings "Oh My"

Well Im shut out from testing my Leica 75 Summarit and waiting for Fed X with my Sony 50 1.4 so i thought I would at least start this test. One thing we seem to always talk about is Bokeh, Bokeh balls and Onion Rings. Well first off I hate onion rings and if its a important focal length and i get them that lens is on the chopping block. But one thing is we never did this as a group of lenses that we may have. Soooo i decided to test all my glass on this subject. My lenses

CV 21F3.5
Sony 24mm 1.4
Sony 50mm 1.4 maybe latter today
CV 40 1.2 i get it next week
Leica 75mm F2.5 Summarit
Batis 85mm 1.8
Batis 135 F 2.8

Oh I did not bother with my CV 15 for obvious reasons

So this is the best time of year for this as many of us have Christmas trees up in our house. Okay its a fake but it works for the test.

So what i did with each lens was keep moving back trying to keep this egg shaped Art object in the same framing for each lens. Its about the size of someones head so that can give you some perspective. Also i thought about this maybe more a portrait type shot so the tree is 6ft away from the Art object that does not move just me and the lenses needed to get the framing. Obviously going from 21 to 135 changes the perspective and not sure anyone would care about a 21mm bokeh balls either but I did it anyway. Only thing I done as a group in post was open shadows a little and drop highlights for better balance. Used existing light in house and shot in Tungsten than warmed them back up in post. I will upload the raws as well.

Than I took each lens from its most wide open setting to about F4 as I figure after F4 your not thinking about bokeh at this point. Bottom line as real world as possible. So lets have a little fun. Watch the Exif data on lenses as that adds a ton of time if I have to type all that out

As we move into the Sony 24mm 1.4 lens lets agree that the CV 21 was not meant to be the bokeh king of 21mm being a 3.5 you just cant expect it. But here with the 24mm 1.4 I would say all of us are very interested in its bokeh for sure. So this is a important lens in your kit for this

F 1.4, f2, F2.8

Being im not filling the frame here but I do think there will be cats eye going out past center and I can try that with just the tree. I guess this test for me is more about onion rings but good to see the center on the Sony quite good with nice round bokeh balls

Not having the CV 40 and Sony 50 i have to jump on over to the Leica 75mm which has no Exif data. But is as follows F2.5/F2.8/F4

F2.5
F2.8

No onion rings with the 75 but you are seeing a little mechnical vignette and a little cats eye. A lens that I would not really count on here. Personally my Sony 24, 50 Batis 85 and 135 I would be more looking at Bokeh stuff but thats me. Here is where i might make the switch back to the GM 85 as we take a look at the Batis 85 here I may opt for better in the GM 85 but lets look at that next
