Mandarin Ducks are a beautiful invasive species, found throughout So. California do to release or escaping from zoos, etc.

Thanks for looking.

That's one beautiful photograph of a beautiful "invader".

Thanks

Excellent capture of the MD, Tim! There is definitely an increasing number of postings of MD lately . Yes, they are not endemic to SoCal but I understood that some parks actually bought and brought them to populate the ponds, no? The are not there year around...

Josh, That would be news to me that a park would bring in a non native species in the hopes they would return each winter. I don’t think that’s the case, but I would be interested if you had any articles, etc. I prefer the natives myself such as the American Wood Duck.

Thanks -Tim

Tim, years back I heard that there was a MD at the LA Arboretum. So, I went there a few days later and I couldn't find anything. I chatted with an employee there and tried to find out more. That person informed me that the ducks didn't last long due to the climate difference. Somehow I was under the impression that they were "transferred" from somewhere else. I couldn't remember the exact info but I thought they were "purchased" but I could be wrong and whatever "transfer" means. There are farms that sell those ducks. One near Davis here in CA and another, seemingly bigger one in Tennessee. Again, I am not sure of the origin of those ducks in our local ponds but they sure are pretty.

We actually sighted over 10 Mandarin ducks at a local pond recently. Here’s a picture, courtesy of our friend, Gary Davidson.

Some Mandarin duck info and reading:

I believe some parks are actually buying these ducks for their ponds, from places like this:

Beautiful work Tim!

I wish these guys would invade SC sometime soon.

Edit:
Hmmm... looks like $175 could make it happen for a Split/White Drake with Regular hen!
