Lol. This is so conflicting. I was set to add the 600mm ISIII with a 5DIV and now I'm reading this.
I either wait for Nikon to respond to the Canon ISIII or wait for Canon to respond to the D500/D850/D5 AF. Or wait for Sony to announce their 500/600mm E mount. Which one you think will come first?

The thing is, the Canon bodies I shoot (1DX2, 5D4, 80D) seem to be able to AF on just about anything I point them at, so I'm just not seeing what you all seem to take as gospel.

My 80D is able to AF on almost anything as long as the subject is moving real slow and is pretty big in the viewfinder (forget reliable AF/tracking with small BIFs etc). And even then it tends to focus on the wrong part of the subject, like the most far away wingtip or so it can find, and tries to switch focus to the background as soon as it gets a chance ;(

I have zero doubt that the D500/D850 isn't just a bit better but leagues apart in AF capability. Although lenses are important, crappy AF will do more harm than slightly lower lens quality.

Why not, I did not realize the Nikon board was not allowed to be viewed by others. I visit here a lot and believe it or not even liked a few of your shots being Nikon and all, along with many others that I hit the like button. FM has always been a place to learn about all aspects of photography. Staying just on the Canon board or the Nikon board or any other board is really being short sighted in my opinion. Why can no one except that all these systems are very good and they all have pros and cons too, including Nikon. I know many photographers that use both systems so should they not look at the board because they are not Nikon only users.

Actually my wife and I where discussing maybe she should look into the D500 or D850 with the 500mm PF lens for her because the Canon setup is a bit heavier. I personally enjoy Canon's lens line up and the 1dx Mark II is rather good with some amazing video but that is not the only tool in the shed so to speak. I have never been a fan boy of any system but I still do not see the merit in switching over for my needs anyway. I would and do encourage anyone to look at all systems that are available.

A case in point a guide in Costa Rica was asking about a system he should get and I actually told him to look into the D500 with the 200-500mm as a very nice and a more so affordable system. So maybe welcome all comers to the Nikon board and maybe you can win them all over, maybe.

So the reason I was here was to see more about the 500mm Pf for my wife then to save Canon's reputation. But now that you mentioned it that 600mm MK III with be a sweet piece of optics which yes is made by Canon

I stand but what I said, please read the entire review, I said the 1DXII had improved compared to the 1DX. There was no Nikon D5 at that time.

Understood. As I said things are always relative and there wasn't a D5 (or D850) to relate to at the time of the 1DX2 review.

But a statement saying for subjects that are as tough as it gets for BIF being almost too easy and getting 30+ frames all tack sharp in a row, doesn't really match up with a statement saying AF is all over the place and struggles mightily. Just because a D5 or D850 is now available shouldn't create that type of opinion change about the 1DX2.

I'm also a proponent of the Nikon's newest AF system and have used it even longer (mid-2016). I've mostly switched also off of Canon. But the 1DX2 is still a really good system and can nail shot after shot of fairly challenging BIF just like yours did of the peregrine falcons back during the 1DX2 review time.

Sony E mount 500 or 600 probably...and it will be a good choice even with the old A9...who knows what they will bring out next in an AF system.

Again,The 1DX II can definitely deliver 30 or for that matter 50 tack sharp frames in a row as the seen in the review. It can also deliver 30 out of 30 soft frames in a row, depending on the day, even with the bird was dead centered in the frame. This means the AF can be "all over the place" and "struggle mightily" compared to something that gets it sharp 8 out of 10 frames but do so 100% of the time ...it is the inconsistency that hurts Canon's AF. It can nail many frames, but it misses even more. The frames you never see..

The difference is not just a little bit for this particular subject.

The D5 maybe but it was useless without the 600 E FL. Nikon did not have a chance at BIF before the new FL lenses.

The Nikon 600 E FL came out in July 2015, the 1DX2 in April 2016. The D5 was announced in Jan 2016 and not sure what delay there was to release but similar to the 1DX2 release.

Anyways both Nikon 600FL and D5 were available at the time of the 1DX2 release. And the 600 FL was the earliest of all three.

Well I had a 1DXII premium kit in my hands in early Jan 2016. I had not seen a Nikon D5 attached to a 600 E FL anywhere until Dec. 2016 and it wasn't until summer 2017 when I tried one for a brief period. Just because it was announced it doesn't mean it was widely available yet and tested in the field. Typically you wait to try out the stuff in the field, borrowing from friends and clients as opposed to shelling out 30+ grand to just try out a system.

It was a painful decision for me dumping all of my stuff after a decade and a half....I grew with Canon and held up as much as I could, but you ultimately do what's best for you.

What's so fascinating about this sort of discussion is that switching systems never improves the subject's photography. Which basically tells you everything you need to know about the wisdom of switching. It's just gear heads being gear heads, lol.

'Never improves' cannot be supported by evidence. To be incorrect, it suffices that one person got one shot that they wouldn't have gotten with the other gear. "Is unlikely to improve one's photography, broadly speaking, in the long term" is probably correct for most photographers, unless they are motivated to work harder with the new gear, or if there is a key feature or lens that is not available in the other system. For some users, there are subjective factors that make them prefer one system over the other, and this can affect motivation to shoot. However, economically switching seems rather ruinous, if one has a number of expensive lenses.

I am sorry but you cannot be further from the truth. for capturing uncle Joe’s images Canon , Nikon or iPhone are the same. The limiting factor in those cases being the skill and the talent of the person behind the camera. But if you desire and are skilled enough to go after certain kind of shots the gear you use makes a difference. Difference between getting the shot and not getting it. Difference between photo of a life time or not. For some subjects, you will never get a second chance....

I find it complexing as to why you have decided to try to justify your changeover decision to the Forum
It's your decision based purely on the technology that you require and is, quite frankly, no-one else's business.
Trying to justify a decision on a Forum just opens you up to all sorts of random, unjustified, ill advised personal opinions from people who just have a different opinion to yours and very little scientific based theory. It's a classic case of the tall poppy syndrome, where everyone likes to take a cheap shot at one of the 'leaders' of the pack
If an athlete at elite level changes shoe brand, based purely on comfort, then that athlete will perform better because they are more comfortable. . .win, win.
If the shoe fits, wear it.

I agree Bruce, I just wanted to share my experience and observation with those who might be on the fence about this and thought maybe this will help them make a decision either way. My bad got off topic here....

Arash;
As more of a part time and casual shooter.....I relied heavily on your opinion regarding this lens. I needed a lens where I could be totally mobile. I enjoy getting out of my truck and hoofing it. I got tired of lugging my Canon 600 mkII and tripod around.
I would not have sold my 600 or 500 for that matter if there had not been a suitable replacement. Keep on doing what you’re doing. I’m not one to blow smoke up peoples asses, but you clearly have your stuff together in this department, especially in the hand-holding category. You definitely got caught up in the forum crap. Just know that there are people like me who don’t live and breathe this thing that rely on you opinion, so keep it coming.

Regards
Al
