So here are a couple of my shots. I expect he will post some of his shortly.

Enjoy!

This guy had an amazing crown of feathers that none of the others did. I wonder why?

Cormorants too. Most were just ugly black, but a few had some color. Different varieties I guess?

Lots of in flight shots today. More of those coming.

It's like we were standing right next to each other.

The Comerants are superb. I didn't manage to get the blue one.

You got some nice photos of the brown pelicans showing breeding colors (right on schedule). The first cormorant is a double-crested. The ones with blue chins are Brandt's cormorant. The Brandt's build nests on the cliff wall just below the pedestrian walkway.

Excellent images from both of you, Steve and John! The breeding colors are beautifully striking. We better go down there before too long if we donít want to miss it.

Thanks for sharing,
Joshua

Good work from both of you. John's colors seem more realistic. I like your open mouth image best and then the landing. John's are all great

Great shots guys. I really like the blue eyed cormorant from John. I've only seen the green eyed variety here in Florida.

After all that bragging about the Sony AF system?

In all seriousness, thanks for the meet and the good shooting. Have to do it again when I get back from Thailand.

Just ordered a 256 GB card and a 120 GB card. I normally use my D500 for wildlife, but in using the D850 yesterday, it filled up my puny 64 GB card in 2 hrs. Can't have that happening on a Thailand excursion

Thanks for the nice comments and having a look.

Morris, I agree, it's hard to beat the color of the D850. As mentioned, I normally shoot the D500, because of the reach, but here the D850 was plenty ... sure notice the color difference between the two.

Will try to post more later, but have to get to work

Just one edit this morning shot through a bush to get some color in the frame.

Edited this one in LR instead of the new version of On1. In On1 they look fine when editing, but somewhere in the export to JPEG they pick up a bunch of contrast an grain. Not sure if it me or the application.

Not focus, that darn blue one wouldn't show me his colors. I wasted like 5 minutes waiting for him to lift his head out from his wing. I will never get that time back.

Yes, we had a great time and will do it again. Next time some migratory birds in the local lakes. lots of color there.

Thanks all for the nice comments. The birds should have their colors through January from what I have been told.

The seals and sea lions are there stinking up the place all year. We could use a few more sharks around here.

Looks better. I also had difficulty with the processing when the blue of the ocean was a background. If I tried to adjust the vibrance or saturation, the color of the water stopped looking authentic (it was flat grey, with white and just hints of blue). Sometimes you can work on making the subject look pleasing ... but create a nuclear background as collateral damage.

Next time we do this, I am going to leave the 1.4x TC at home. There were 2 spots where the pelicans flew: a) close to us, by the cliff, or b) farther away. When they were close to us by the cliff, we had perfect light, but the wingspan of the pelicans was *exactly* the width of my frame. This means, I was forever cutting off wingtips, the feet, head, etc. The far away shots were in bad light, so I didn't get a single keeper due to my 1.4 TC. If I would have brought my caps, and removed it, I would have had a boatload

Anyway, here are a few more of mine, take in good light.

Picking the right focal length was hard. I was thinking I should have gone a little longer because I am having to crop too much. But I did end up getting tons of flying images.

Oh, and I did find that blue guy hiding in one of my images. Big crop to get close though.

Yes. It looks like you had your 100-400 between 100-173mm to catch your pelicans in flight.

Mine was fixed at 300 + 1.4 TC, so most of the close / cliff shots were too cramped. 200-300mm would have been ideal for the closest cliff shots.

Looks like you forgot you had a zoom ... and left it at 100mm ... rather than zooming-in to fill the frame

It's a perfect composition, with full colors displayed. Too bad it was taken at 100mm and cropped-in. Had you taken it at 400mm (mine were @ 420mm), all of the background would have disappeared. Still a nice shot though and glad you found it. I used Nik software to bring out those subtle natural colors in mine, like we talked about. Didn't add anything that wasn't authentically there ... just enhanced what was naturally present.

Speaking of which, I was able to salvage a couple of distant flight shots ... that were far enough away so as to crop-in ... but close enough to still hold some critical detail. It's difficult on birds with such a huge wingspan. Hope you like these ...
