or I guess the bird experts call it "rushing". I was lucky enough to capture these just before I was ready to leave and head home.

Fred, you are killing me. I am dying to get these birds, and god willing, when they are rushing. Lovely , 1, 2 and 4 for me.

Very nice set of images. You managed to get a Western Grebe competing with a Clark's Grebe.

Fred, I am “officially” envious of your images. As you know, I have been trying for several weeks to get them to do the “dance” and they didn’t cooperate. You did well there and staying longer paid off - voted!

That’s pretty cool if that is in fact two different grebe species rushing in a mating dance.

Great shots Fred. It must have been a good feeling seeing them do this just as you were about to pack it in.

And yes, as mentioned, the dual rush is a Western and a Clark's rushing together.

Herb,

They are competing but are probably both males. They are showing off for nearby females. The sequence does not show the end of the rush, but if a female is in the pair she will drop out first, if they are both males they take a dive close together. I have seen many rushes that involve three or even four grebes. Again they are competing not prospectively mating. If a female is in a group of three or more she will quickly drop out.

Clark's and Western's do not interbreed.

In this case the ID is clear that one is a Clark's and the other is probably a Western. Adult Clark's usually have a white streak above the eye, but the black crown can come down around most of the eye but will not completely fill in the bottom of the eye. That sometimes makes it a bit uncertain if the black fill at the bottom is hard to see, but most Westerns have a wide black margin at the bottom of the eye which is easy to see. The other ID factor is the color of the bill. The Clark's is orange and the Western is yellow or yellow-green. In this case that seems to confirm that one is a Western.

@dclark - thanks, Dave, for the explanation. I learned something I didn't know.
