Here are some from my recent 4-day visit. It was fascinating. Wished I had longer. Maybe next year. There were upwards of 50 of us lined-up, watching these birds absorb the Sun’s first radiant energy of the new day.

The first 9 images are of an apparent disagreement between two cranes, with one demonstrating dominance over the other, as the sequence unfolds.

A thin sheet of ice is evident in the foreground of each image. Its a very long, cold night, and I cannot help but be in awe of how these animals cope with it all.

As the shoot progressed, my right index finger became cold enough that more often than not, I repeatedly pressed what I thought was the shutter button, only to have nothing happen.

Not that it matters but what camera and lens combination did you use?

Thank you bobbytan. I assume you are asking about the numbers of cranes and snow geese. During my 4 days, there were perhaps several thousand cranes.

I conservatively estimate there were over 100,000 snow geese in the refuge (at various locations). However, during each of the 4 days I was there, they *all* settled onto the “Flight Deck” and remained there throughout most of each day. This was a spectacle, especially when they all took to flight at once!

Thank you Morris. Yes, witnessing that mass of Snow Geese at once is awesome.

Thank you Socrate, Joshua and Julius: When we use it, low light also contributes so much to our nature imagery.

I used the D850 and 200-500 for these Julius..
