Saw this northern harrier sitting in the water at my local wetlands, so just waited to see what would take place. Watched it for 45-minutes to an hour while it made several passes over the variety of waterfowl, stopping in between to dry off. It came up empty each time. So amazing to watch!

In the water, is it on prey? It sat there for a good five minutes ...

As it takes off, I wondered if it would have a bird. Somehow, though, the Coot didn't drown.

The coot lives another day as the harrier takes off.

Nice set of action shots, Jeffry. I see lots of Harriers near where I live. I have never seen them land in the water or go for something as large as a coot. So, I really appreciate seeing these images. Thanks for sharing them here! Happy Holidays!

What a treat to watch these series of events unfold! That was one lucky Coot to hold out for the drowning and surface. That hawk spent a lot of energy to end up without a meal.

Thanks everybody! It was incredible to watch this bird hunt! I have to say I felt bad for it not getting dinner though.

Apparently, the harrier didn't have enough power to subdue the coot. Apparently, not because of mis-opportunity but the coot is too big of a prey, I assume. Well captured behavioral captures, Jeffry!!

Very interesting behaviour captured. Do harriers typically hunt ducks? I didn't know they did. It would seem those birds might be too big of prey for it?

I think smaller ducks and coots are at the upper size limit of what is possible for them. I have seen Coopers Hawks take a coot at the same site, as well as the bobcats so it seems coots are on everybody’s menu!
