These were taken from the blind at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Even with big heavy birds like the jouvinile swan in the first image, they are rarely injured when they fly into each other. The Great Blue Heron image is a large crop.

I think they don't break wings because there mass is low compared to size an the resistance during the collisions is low as there is hardly any friction holding them in place
