I'd love some feedback on these photos I took of a couple of Icelandic Horses. All critiques are welcome! Anything from composition and crop to post processing!

The backgrounds are distracting, more so the 1st one

Beautiful light, nice compositions. You could easily darken the backgrounds highlights to address Randy's concern.

Lovely light. I think a bit more DOF would be beneficial in #2, as the mane seems to be the subject, and it is OOF along the neck. Of course, if you do that, the background can become more prominent so that part of the image might require more management (in camera or in post processing). Good images.

Yeah, those backgrounds. For extreme closeups like this I'd want more neutral backgrounds (and the DOF errors fixed). But given how lively these backgrounds are, a wider framing would give the viewer a clearer sense of the landscape and make them less distracting.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the responses! I went ahead and tried to dim the backgrounds by making the blues darker and lowering the highlights. I also cropped in a bit closer on the 2nd image, thanks again!

A lower angle might have addressed some of the problems by placing sky behind your subjects ~ Ron
