p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Third set - Costa Rica - Rare/Difficult

Here is a set from Costa Rica, all taken on the photo tour I lead to the area every year. These are all either rare or difficult to find species or images that are a bit harder to get.
Of course almost everyone who goes to Costa Rica wants to see (and photograph) a Resplendent Quetzal so I am putting an image of this awesome bird first in this post. The male has these long tail feathers which are simply gorgeous.

Second image is of a 3-toed sloth with a baby. Sloths are actually fairly common in Costa Rica but most visitors only see them as brownish-green blobs up in the trees, because sloths sleep a lot. We were lucky enough to get some shots of this one with a clear view and with a baby clinging to the mother's chest. Image taken with Canon 5D Mark IV and Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Third shot is of a bat getting nectar from a rainforest flower. Not an easy image to get but one that my group has lots of success with at one of the lodges we visit.

Last image is for the hummingbird lovers - a White-crested Coquette. These birds are rare and don't visit feeders like other hummingbirds so this makes it very difficult to capture a photo of. Image taken with all natural lighting, no flash. Canon 5D Mark IV and Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Nice set Don. Neat to see the bat and coquette in action.

Well done, I was able to get all of these species except the sloth in Costa Rica so know how difficult they are to capture. Bruce

For sloths, both Three-toed and Two-toed, best place to find them is on the Caribbean side, between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Almost guaranteed sightings are also in little nature enclave in La Fortuna named Bogarin Trail.
Male Resplendent Quetzal does not have long tail feathers all the time. But even without them is a fascinating bird to photograph.
Don, was that male White-crested Coquette photographed at Rancho Naturalista?

xelas - the Coquette was not at Rancho Naturalista - it was at a place off highway 2 near the Las Quebradas Biological center. Though when I was there I heard that Rancho Naturalista had a Black-crested Coquette, which is even more rare.

Excellent captures, Don! I do enjoy the bat and coquette. Again, since I haven't encountered them during the last two visits to CR. Oh. well .

Thanks to all who commented and gave some more of the natural history of the species I chose to show. Great forum.

Nice set from CR. I wish they were larger... they're only 10% on my 27" iMac
