Yes that is normally very true. It tends to be the slower the lens the more DOF can be acquired by aperture. Also the higher the quality of the lens will also affect the DOF and be shorter . Case in point those very expensive Rodenstock tech cam lenses they would diffract at F5.6 which was a nightmare trying to get DOF off of them. Focus stacking is a big part of MF shooting because of that and here in 35mm land we will run into that as well. The Loxia's typically are great or hit there best aperture at about F8 than they start to slide. Im guessing here on this Sony being corrected well at 1.4 that at F8 its already sliding. Need to look at the Raws here and see where this maybe happening on the Sony. Now just because it diffracts does not mean its bad but in real world you need to be aware that okay if your in the field and you know your starting to slide because you need that DOF and focus stacking is out maybe becuase of wind lets say than you need to accept this. Its not always worst case but just knowing this stuff will help you make decisions in the field. Its really one reason I test lenses is to know where the bad things can come up

Okay having said all that im looking at my Raws at infinity. No question F11 is sliding the wrong way. Its diffracting pretty good here on center. F8 looks a touch going that way too. Not as obvious but im seeing something on the Sony

Yup F8 its going. Im processing it now

I never did say which F stop was best in corners on the Sony as i got a little side tracked but hopefully you can see it here its F5.6 as F8 is starting to diffract. Now i did not shoot F6.3 but it maybe fine there. We are pixel peeping here folks

First one is 5.6 than F8

Hi Guy,

For LF camera lenses at least in the past and with technical cameras offering tilt such as with the Cambo Actus line of cameras you can also use tilt with the appropriate lenses to try to maintain focus along a plane and in an effort to use larger apertures (as in f5.6 vs f8).

So having seen this, if your a dedicated landscape kind of person than the Loxia maybe the better option as it dont diffract until F11. Now thats getting damn picky too, so be aware of that. The Sony would serve the landscape shooter too. But now we know where we are here. See here IMHO testing counts the most is figuring out the limitations and the the better sides of your gear. I love knowing this stuff when the money is on the line in the field.

Absolutely and even back in the hey day of 4x5 that was the real solution was using tilt on the standards to grab as much DOF as possible by tilting the lens the way of the area . Usually down

On My MF tech cam I had the Combo so it was not on the body but you can buy the lens that had built in Tilt in them. Usually about a grand more. I had it on my 60mm and 90mm lenses and passed on like my 28mm since that one is very wide

Here is where Sony needs to throw some attention like Canon and giving us some T/S options

Hi Guy,

That may be true regarding Sony and T/S lenses, but like Fujifilm for APS cameras and their GFX 50 and the soon to be released GFX R, Sony can rely on using the camera with a large assortment of lenses at least down to 28mm (and if you wish T/S Canon and Nikon lenses) use these cameras with the Cambo Actus line which will offer Rise/Fall, shift, Tilt, Swing (and these movements can be used in combination while not possible with T/S lenses), and if you add one of the Tilt kits even more capabilities when needed.

So F5.6 is the best in the Corners at F5.6 but dont rule out F6.3 to use. Also at F4 its really incredible as well. Really hard to see 5.6 being that much better than F4. Thats pretty damn amazing folks

So here is where the Loxia has the edge at F4 the Loxia is a touch better. Remember we are in the extreme corners here. But watch those two arrows the Loxia shows a better Sun star. But look at the flashing on the roof line. Im seeing some CA or something on the Sony and not the on the Loxia. Now the question is can that be cleaned up and im sure it can

Sony
Loxia

Both at F4

Going back in on C1 on the Sony if I hit the CA correction it all goes away even at F 1.4. So reality is its a non issue if you correct it. Otherwise its there

I cant speak for LR as i dont use that program. But glad to see it clean right up. Sunstars Loxia wins that battle , Distortion Sony wins that battle.

Im just amazed on how close these things really are. Gotta give Sony a little love here

Agreed, Sony has been on quite a roll with lenses. The 12-24mm, the 24-105mm and now the 24mm, are all fabulous. (not to mention the amazing 85mm ƒ1.8, which punches -far- above its pay grade.)

Good to hear on the landscape...this lens makes sense for me if it can be a multi-purpose lens all in a small package, and being capable in landscape puts it there. For the brief time I've had with it so far, I'm very happy with results. It'll get some landscape use next week in Maui.

I agree the Sony in my mind is the more versatile lens. It can do everything damn good. May not be perfect for everything. We still need to test some things and I know Fred well enough he is on it this morning

If DOF is desired, the GM 24 minimal ficus breathing should be a breeze for stacking. I tried a quick astro shot the other day and it's much easier to blend the foreground in. None of my other lens is as good in this respect. I hope the future GM 15 has this feature as well cause the Laowa I'm using has significant breathing.

I'd love to see an f/8-f/11 center test vs the 16-35/4. If this thing can beat the zoom in the center between f/8 and f/11 I'll feel a lot better about this lens as a "do it all" complement to the very versatile zoom.

They rather make a 14 f/1.2 GM...
It can be up to the size of the Sigma 14 1.8.
