Spent the early morning out shooting with a friend when we spotted a pair of Rough-legged hawks in a far off tree. Thinking our chances of us getting close enough to get a decent shot or two was going to be near impossible, started shooting and moving closer one at a time. But much to our surprise we were able to get within about 30 yards before they decided enough was enough and flew off. Here's a few of the shots I was able to get.

Wonderfully sharp! You have your combo of body and lens humming. I am impressed by the quality of the lens in many shots I see online and yours is no exception.

Thanks very much, and yes I'm pretty happy with this combo as long as you gain focus early on in a flight sequence.

Thanks Dave, as it turned out this morning was a raptor morning with a close encounter with a beautiful Red Tail shortly after this one.

#3 is my fave. I use the same strategy as you (taking shots as I get closer) and it looks like it worked well for you. The main challenge is being ready when they decide to fly and it looks like you were up to the task.
