This is Tim. He is believed to be the oldest and largest living elephant. After rubbing off his tracking collar a few months ago he has been rarely spotted, and when we arrived at Amboseli National Park a few weeks ago he had not been seen in a while. Then, within 5 minutes of leaving our lodge, and even before we made it to the park, there he was. Often coming to within 5m of our vehicle. Our guide, a local Masai warrior was even more excited than we were to see Tim.

If you are headed for Amboseli, I encourage you to use Elephant Garden Safaris. The owner, Eric, is a great guy, and a Masai warrior. Also, please donate to the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. They do research and protect the elephants of Amboseli.

These shots were taken with a 6D II and the Tamron 70-200 G2. If you have not shot this lens, get one. Sharp as any prime and the IS is unbelievable.

Something this size being hidden makes you respect the vastness of the area. Like Ron, the though of poachers taking this prize would be beyond saddening, lets hope this survivor lives out his life naturally

So many tings to love about this post. One of my mines is right down the road from Amboseli. I have known Tim a long time. Back in the 1970's Tsavo, and Amboseli had a lot of big, Red, Tuskers. A Tusker is an elephant whose tusks are big enough to hit the ground. Almost all gone now because of poachers.

I love Tim, Amboseli, and my Tamron 70-200 2.8.

Amazing photos of an amazing elephant. Those tusks remind me of illustrations of the tusks of extinct mastodons.

Will be in a few weeks in my favorite part of this world, Greater Kruger South Africa and so looking forward to it. Surrounded by these majestic animals is just .... majestic. My backpacks are ready with polished camera gear and indeed, my 70-200mm f/2.8 is in there as per standard but then in the Nikon E FL version.

Very, very nice. I think someone else said it, but ya pretty impressive for something that size to not be seen for months.

And those tusks!!! Wow.
