I just finished my image-heavy review of the A7rIII after almost a year of ownership. Also provided some tips regarding color science and post-processing in the review, as well as a selection of some of the images I've made with the camera.

Check it out: https://indergaard.net/2018/10/09/sony-a7riii-review/

Great pictorial review.
Favorite shots-
1. man, goats, castle ruins
2. snow covered path river bank.
3. bridge to Lafoten

Nope. Not even with my Oly M1ii would I place it in a puddle!

On A7Riii I often shoot silent shutter/in a blind close to the birds. If not the shutter
is loud enough to spook them.

Borge I agree with you in that the A7Riii is the greatest all-arounder Sony has ever made. How
can it be improved!

I love the idea of doing a review after using gear for a year!

Much interesting stuff in there (and some beautiful photos too).

Some of your conclusions are quite surprising:

- You like the colors, but you spent a lot of money to buy profiles making them look like from Canon (for example).
From my point of view, you can get extremely good colors out of Sony cameras especially in combination with Zeiss glass, but this needs some work, more than with most of the other brands. So you could also say, colors are not so good, but because of the fantastic sensor and expensive profiles I can live with that.
Your recomendation for better colors seems to be copied from Fred and does not work for skin tones/portraits.
- Why do you use "silent shooting" for landscapes? This makes you lose dynamic range. You won`t have class-leading dynamic range anymore.
- The white balance performance is actually a big problem and the camera does not set it properly or consistently.
- From your opinion, the camera doesn’t spit out pre-cooked raw files, what a professional camera shouldn’t do at all, but you assume that Sony is suppressing the noise by crushing the darks and blacks somewhat aggressively.

I don't believe silent shooting in single shot has any effect on DR, am I wrong?

Its a head scratcher that for the moments you'd want silent shutter most (indoor ceremonies etc) you can't use it due to banding. That was a let down as silent shutter was a selling point for me. Now I'm clickin & snapping away indoors like always :/

By having AF as good as the A9.

No, you’re right. The A7rII had a DR penalty for the electronic shutter. The A7rIII does not, at least not in single-shot.

It’s a current technology limitation. Avoiding banding requires fast sensor readout, otherwise reading the sensor for a given exposure captures multiple cycles of lights. The A9’s sensor is fast enough to do this, but only at 24MP. It’ll get there for higher MP.

Thanks for your constructive feedback. Let me clarify.

- I like the colors, but Sony's raw files are pretty flat out of the camera, and as you say, the files require some work to shine compared to for example Canon (reds), Nikon (warmth), Leica (warmth, saturated and punchy). Personally I don't use the latest Huelight profiles any more. They are too yellowish for what I prefer. That doesn't make them "not good", they're just not my cup of tea. I linked to Fred's post in my article, and stated that the settings was his and that I really like them. Oh, and I do like them for some portraits even, as I prefer the warmth they give to the skintones I frequently photograph. I also like playing with profiles and LUT's. Was it necessary to purchase the profiles get good colors from the camera? absolutely not.

- I use silent shooting for landscapes whenever I'm on a tripod. Simply to prevent any kind of risk of shutter shock. I have done many comparisons, and haven't found a single practical difference between using silent shooting or not in single-shot mode.

- I'm pretty happy with the AWB performance of the A7rIII. Your experience might be different.

- When I compare raw files (especially high iso files) side by side with other cameras, then yes, the Sony's files have somewhat crushed blacks and shadows compared to other files. Maybe this is the nature of this sensor, but it doesn't look right upon close inspection. I am not assuming this to be a fact, but rather, just stating my own observations after countless comparisons.

That's not unique to Sony. This is the case on any camera in full electronic shutter mode, with the exception being the Sony A9. The same happens on all the Fuji's with electronic shutter I've tried it on. I would absolutely love the next iteration of the R-series to do full silent shooting like the A9. It would make it perfect for street work as well.

Very simple explanation. Sony has more DR and flies will naturally be flatter coming off the sensor. Thats what DR will do is spread the tonal range out on a flatter plane. Many times i may even add like 3 points of black just to get that little bit of punch back. This is exactly what you get in Medium Format backs as well with this DR range. This is normal

Also a buggy is being color managed both in software, larger color gamut profiles like Prophoto or Adobe RGB and the buggy is your monitor. I use a wide gamut NEC monitor which will show almost the full gamut of these prophoto and adobe color gamut’s. Many hobbyists are using SRGB monitors which have a smaller gamut. Great for web work but your really not seeing the full tonal range of your tifs and such.

Tony by that you mean AF-C tracking, and that usually implies for BIF.
So I have to ask, have you shot the A7Riii? Own one? I think the A7Riii's AF-C
tracking is easily BIF'able; granted though when at a birding hotspot I'll take my
a9 first.

A red AF box would be a start

Lovely images, maybe I'll do a one year review as well. I will say the R3 has given me the most prolific year of amazing shots yet.
