I know that most folks on this forum seem to have a preference for western desert, mountains, and coastal scenes. And, honestly, I also like them - a lot. But as fate will have it, I live in Pensacola, Florida (on the Gulf Coast) and I still have the strong NEED to take pictures. For the most part, we have a lot of white sand beaches and sand dunes and associated shore birds. We also have a lot of tourists. Frequently, it is difficult to find truly pristine scenes that we landscape photographers want to find under the right conditions. We have storms that can dramatically change the landscape. Right now, we have Hurricane Michael scheduled to make landfall near here by Wednesday.

Given that background, folks that live in my area and visitors to my area desire to see images of pristine conditions that we may see along this coast. I try to take images that appeal to me and that particular demographic. The following image is one and it has done well for me. I am curious to see how well folks on this board like these sort of images since they are different from what one would see out west.

I thought it would be a great time to share with all the incredible fall images appearing right now. FWIW, this is a fall image..... Fall in Florida is much like winter, spring, summer.

As always, I appreciate any and all comments. I do enjoy constructive critiques as they help me learn and improve.

Thanks,

Well seen and well shot. Have you considered making it a crop pano, reducing the sky and the foreground?

Yea, I have printed it in several standard sizes using 4x5, 5x7, and other ratios. Biggest was a 25x35 custom to fit a specific space. I just left it in the full size for displaying here.

Good shot, Jim. After living most of my life in FL, I share your frustration with that landscape. I actually switched to wildlife, plentiful there, just to keep up the hobby. After years of traveling to the west, I finally made the move.

Thanks Stan. Although wildlife interests me, I haven't been able to justify in my mind purchasing the lenses and equipment for that sort of stuff. Maybe later. Right now I can still find interesting stuff and I think (hope) that it is helping me "see" things I used to just pass by. Time will tell.

Thanks! I think we will be fine. It's supposed to go to the east of us, and if that holds true we will be on the west side of the storm - a much better place. Probably will get some rain and wind, but not too much. The fact that it is moving fast is another good sign because it is the slow moving ones that really do a number where ever they hit.

Beautiful image Jim.. My initial thought was maybe a small crop off the top to bring even more focus on the FG which is really fantastic.. I read your reply above and you indicated you have tried different crops already. These are my favorite types of images... thought provoking and creative. Great job in finding this image many would walk right by and not give it a second thought. Regards,
Dean

Yea, when I use one of the standard crops, my customers generally prefer that I save the bottom when I crop. This does have the effect of cutting off the excess sky. A bad habit that I have is trying too much to fill in all the space in the frame. So I have been trying to give a little breathing room around the subject so that I can crop accordingly. It's a tough habit to break as you will see in some other images I will post.

The simplicity is wonderful here Jim. I touch of a crop off the top might be warranted, but not necessary. Photos like this get overlooked a lot today, but I think are wonderful.

Excellent shot Jim. This image has a strong presence. I can feel the warm breeze and hear the waves rolling in. Peaceful

I hope Michael isn't pounding you too badly down there today. Man, you guys are taking a direct hit from this Cat 4 monster. Fingers crossed for you and family.

Thanks Dave. Fortunately (for us anyway) Michael passed to the east of us, meaning we were on the west side. That is the less dangerous side and as fast as it moved, we only got some gusts in the 40s and a moderate amount of rain. I feel for those further east though.

That's good news! We're getting hammered by it right now. I'm surprised to see the amount of wind and rain this thing is still carrying inland this far. They actually closed all the schools and other facilities around here today. I've never seen them do this before after living here over 22 years. I almost got hit by a tree the fell in front of me on my way to work this morning. What a way to start the day huh!

Well stay safe! This was a strong storm. It may even get back to hurricane status when it exits over the Atlantic. Too much warm water this year.

I'm one of those Western guys that just happened to discover the beauty of the panhandle this past weekend, so please continue posting!

I found it interesting shooting beach images as opposed to mountain vistas - it's much more different than I expected, but that was good!

I was in Destin and shot mostly at Miramar Beach as I was closest to that, but sunrise there was easy to get images without people or junk congesting the images. Maybe I was lucky as well, but walking out on the East Jettys of Destin at sunset, I also had no issues with people or junk in my images. Catching the changing light on any clouds at sunrise was fabulous.

I really love this image and the colors in the sky. My only constructive criticism is that I'd prefer the sea oats weren't cut off so abruptly.

Hope you guys are well after the storm. Panama City and Mexico Beach look absolutely devastated.
