p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Official Canon R photos

This thread is for photos taken with any combination of Canon R camera with Canon R lenses, or any adapted lenses such as EF, and including other brands shot on R cameras.

I will kick it off since I recently had the opportunity to shoot with the R and its lenses.

All shots are JPGs with very little adjustment (I have RAW, but no way yet to process the CR3 files), taken in the Canon Burbank office (camera and lenses not allowed to leave the office!).

Enjoy!

Here is some foliage other out of doors.

Sorry for the overcast skies, we are having the after-effects of a tropical hurricane hitting Southern California.

The RF 50/1.2L is so clean...

If there's anything that sells the EOS R, it's these lenses!

I posted a few pictures on this thread:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1561601/0#14594184

It also has a link to DPP 4.9.0 which can process CR3. Here is the link:

We should be getting some excellent images soon . . . as soon as production units are available.

Hopefully others will have access to the new R gear and post photos. Until then, I hope I can entertain and enlighten with the pictures I've accumulated.

In looking through the pictures, see a strong inclination on my part (and obvious enthusiasm) toward the new RF 50/1.2L. I can only imaging how nice the 28-70/2 will be. BTW -- these lenses + bodies aren't really that large or heavy of a package.

I was also taken by the add-on battery grip -- looks appropriate. I have grips on all my small Sony a7-series. Even without grip, the Canon has a much better feel for my grip, and handier buttons for the most part (haven't figured how that slider is important, but I'll reserve judgment until I mess with it someday).

Here are some more shots with both lenses where I've done a tiny bit more PP to the JPGs. Mostly to correct distortion and to adjust exposure, color and a little broad dodge and burn to bring out some details in high contrast scenes like these interior/exterior views.

I'm anxious to be able to do full PP in LR once Adobe gets cracks the code on the CR3 RAW files.

All shots wide open.

This image got the most "arty" PP to attempt to equalize areas. Still, pretty tame. ;)

I guess for the moment, I have apparently cornered the market here on FM for images taken with the new R camera. Hopefully, others will be adding more images as the cameras get more access among photographers instead of reviewers.

2-shot pano from JPGs, RF 50L @ f1.8 with minor PP, hand held.

Looking forward to your report. If you are going to take test images, make sure to bring at least a SDXC II card.

They should have at least an in store demo unit to try since they are due to ship Oct 9.

There is an in store event Oct 11.

If not, also check Adorama.

A silly question: how’s the shutter sound compared to 5D IV? And a related one : does it have an electronic shutter?

Ha lucky! They wouldn't let me put a card in the EOS R I tried out.

@gfiksel the shutter sound is nice - kind of reminds me of the fuji XT2 shutter sound. Nicely damped.

The foreground blur looks great, I'm not so sure about some of the background foliage though. Hoping that it is a weird .jpg compression artifact.

For all of the 50L's faults (EF 1.2 variety), background rendering is definitely not one of them.

I think he was shooting through a double-pane window in a few of these. That will really mess with images.

Exactly right! A few shots were through glass office windows, just to see what it would do. Overall, I was extremely happy with the performance of the new RF 50L.

Awesome display of images Jim! I love the rendering and feel of the RF 50/1.2L Camera bodies come and go but great lenses last a generation or longer.

Thanks Charles!

I feel the same.

I was just reacquainting myself this morning with my EF 50/1.2L, and I have to say compared to this new lens from Canon, it just doesn't measure up. I shot wide-open and at f/3.5 in contrasty morning light, and it was so hard to re-adjust my expectations after shooting with the new RF lens.

I suppose I'll survive, but that's the downside of being exposed to new and improved technology! Ha-ha! (Poor Fred!)

I don't have a 5D4 to compare. But it seems quieter than my 5DsR, which seems pretty quiet to me. I don't have the specs, but wouldn't be surprised to find it has silent mode. I didn't make any adjustments to the basic camera settings, other than RAW + JPG, ISO, center AF point, and aperture priority. Seems to be electronic shutter, based on the slight EVF "stutter" when taking shots with moving subjects in frame.

My takeaway about the camera and lens combo was that I was very pleasantly surprised at its overall light weight and relative small size -- it seems right in between the Sony a7-series and the Canon 5D-series. It seemed very nimble and well put together to me.
