p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bison in first snow of the season

We walked along a steam and ran into a nice herd of Bison. Out of nowhere a black cloud came over and it started to snow hard. After about five minutes it was sunny again. Interesting weather in YNP to say the least.

At first i tried to shoot with autofocus on the Sony A6000, but it kept focusing on the falling snow. I finally switched to manual focus and was able to get some good images. Thanks to Sony's excellent implementation of focus peaking it is almost as easy and fast as autofocus. Mirrorless is wonderful technology.

The herd in snow.

Big Bull in snow flurries

Camera would not get focus on Bison in autofocus, had to switch to manual.

Nice photos, what were your AF area settings on the one where you could not get AF to focus the bison?

nicely done, Steve, wow, it's already snowing in YNP. When I visited in May, the snow from the winter was still melting alongside the road in many places. The fur is coming back on the bison, they were shedding when I visited.
#2 is my pick. you may want to consider a smaller crop, ie. show more of the FG and BG

Thanks all.

The blurry shots were done on AFC (LOW because nothing was moving fast) , Focus Area was set to single point (SMALL). It still couldn't find it's way between the snow flakes. I was very surprised at that. Focus peaking on manual also showed a wall of red, but as long as the subject was also red, focus was good. Since I have never shot falling snow like that I don't know if the problem would have existed with other cameras.

The first is my pick Steve. Too early for me to rapp my head around snow. I hope there is a way to get AF to work with such a simple and common obstruction.

That's interesting. I don't have snow to play with, but I have noticed that if the focus area is set to wide and I am trying to shoot a larger BIF, sometimes the BIF will be OOF, and some very small bird will be in focus. I guess that manual focus is the answer in those situations. But mostly the BIF will be in focus.

I was born in Key West Florida, grew up on the beach in San Diego, spent a great deal of time in Equatorial Africa. I will never be able to wrap my head around snow. Maybe that's why I had issues shooting through it.
