I'm with those who like #1 the most. I haven't had a chance to print it yet — I've only been home a couple of days! — but I'm planning to do so before long. I think that the image "has legs," partly due to the responses I've already gotten to the photograph and because of the source of some of the responses.
I photographed a lot of rocks on this trip! One of the characteristics of this particular spot is that the area is very rocky — talus slopes descending to the valley floor, to the edges of lakes, and everywhere above our 10,800' campsite. In addition, it is in a long, eastern Sierra canyon that runs almost north/south, rather than the more typical east/west orientation of this side of the range. In addition, the canyon is surrounded on three sides (east, south, and north) by very high, rocky ridges. This meant that we did not get sun until several hours after sunrise, and the sun was gone a few hours before sunset. This meant a lot of photography done in soft, shaded light — something I enjoy a lot.
These annual trips are very special. First, I'm part of a group that has been going into the backcountry of the Sierra for nearly two decades, though my connection began only about a decade ago. We've formed some tremendous bonds through this experience. Second, the group of photographers is a pretty special one. I regard myself as a sort of "junior associate" of some of these folks. Third, it is a very special experience to base-camp in one spot for a week or more and work outwards from there — we have the opportunity to explore the areas we visit in ways that simply are not possible when one is passing through on a thru-hike or when hiking in each day from a trailhead.
And, yes, there will be fall color photographs before too long, as well. Aspen colors were already appearing at the higher elevations when we left on 9/22. The usual peak color in this area is centered around the first couple of week of October plus a bit on either side of that. I'll likely be heading back up in the next week or so to photograph the color.
