The smoke in Jasper was very heavy all weekend in mid-August, It made landscape photography very challenging. I was at this lovely lake right off the highway on a calm Sunday morning, checking out the angles of the reed beds against the smoky background when I saw this family of fisherfolk approaching. The colour they provided intersected perfectly with the darker bed of reeds in the foreground and the dark mass of a small island and the very obscured far shore. The lack of colour in the overall image makes it look flat and grey. The darks were punched up a bit to extract at least of a bit of information in the background.

Comments of all sorts are most welcome.

Ken

Welcome to the new era of summertime landscape shooting in the west. I believe smoke from wildfires will be something we are just going to have to contend with as every year it’s getting worse and spreading further. I have chosen to either not shoot or compose for “intimate” landscapes that don’t include the sky or distant vistas.
As in the case of the above image, the smoke substitutes for fog and adds a nice effect to the shot. Fog however burns off where as smoke lingers and builds for weeks and months.
I worry not only about the challenges the smoke brings to compositions, but even more importantly the damage it does to us breathing Smokey air particularly when hiking in such an unhealthy environment.
So, I have made two significant changes to my approach to summertime landscape and wildlife shooting: only intimate compositions that don’t require shooting through much atmosphere and no strenuous hiking.
I’m curious as to how others who shoot out west including B.C. And Alberta are coping with this seemingly permanent change in our favorite locations.
All that said, nice shot. The color of the fishing family accents and balances the shot nicely.

A great, simple, minimalist composition. In this case perhaps the smoke helped make the photo what it is.

Many thanks for the comments! Yes, no smoke = weak shot in this case.

I hate the smoke - but wow - you made a great pic using it! Love the comp. I also think this would make a great B/W.

i was fighting with the smoke in glacier national park the past few days and it sounds like there will be more in the tetons this week. you made it work though, great minimalist shot of the lake. a strong diagonal composition between the land, boat and reeds in the foreground.

A great stark scene.
Wow, all that smoke. My only Jasper memories are years ago when I didn't even think about planning trips out west due to fire.
