Welcome to the new era of summertime landscape shooting in the west. I believe smoke from wildfires will be something we are just going to have to contend with as every year it’s getting worse and spreading further. I have chosen to either not shoot or compose for “intimate” landscapes that don’t include the sky or distant vistas.
As in the case of the above image, the smoke substitutes for fog and adds a nice effect to the shot. Fog however burns off where as smoke lingers and builds for weeks and months.
I worry not only about the challenges the smoke brings to compositions, but even more importantly the damage it does to us breathing Smokey air particularly when hiking in such an unhealthy environment.
So, I have made two significant changes to my approach to summertime landscape and wildlife shooting: only intimate compositions that don’t require shooting through much atmosphere and no strenuous hiking.
I’m curious as to how others who shoot out west including B.C. And Alberta are coping with this seemingly permanent change in our favorite locations.
All that said, nice shot. The color of the fishing family accents and balances the shot nicely.
