I had a great, albeit windy afternoon in sweet light last Spring photographing these Common terns (?). It was my first time with such an opportunity, having crossed about 100 ft of rocky access to this habitat improvement project on Lake Ontario. Now that access has been pulled so this was a one-time deal. All taken with Canon 1Dx, 500 II and 1.4III

wow Kim you are rocking with the 500 mm. these are extra nice. the light is also awesome. thanks for sharing.

You did a great job Kim. 1, 2, 3 and 5 are my picks

Was there a cliff behind you where you took these? The last time I was up that way I saw the beach below the cliffs and some people had found there way down and were walking along the beach. My family and I talked it over and felt it was a huge risk as the tide could come in or a rogue wave and you could be trapped.

Thank you KD. I do love that lens in the right situation. But for the wind (which actually added a little to some of the pictures), that afternoon was probably right up there as one of my best.

Thanks Morris. These were up at Braddock Bay, north and west of Rochester. Fortunately, there was no cliff to deal with--just massive stacked / jumbled limestone rock.

Thank you Robert. Yes, they seemed to do pretty well with relatively large fish. Assuming they are actually Caspian terns, I've read they're the largest in the world. I guess they would be well-equipped to manage pretty large fish.

Thank you. I shot most of these at 1/4000 and a 1.4 extender on the 500 II. I think that might have worked to my advantage in great light on a very windy day.
