After nearly a week of clouds and rain the sun came out and I headed to the beach for another opportunity to photograph the fall migration. When I first arrived I wondered where all the birds were and then I realized it was Saturday so the birds where where the people are not, an empty strip of beach between Nickerson Beach and Long Beach. This area was packed with migratory shore birds and I had a blast. These are a few of the last images I took that day.
The first was done using a long exposure and rear curtain flash which produces a double exposure effect first taking the ambient exposure which is a blur and then the flash fires just as the shutter closes producing a sharp image of your subject in front of a trailing streak. For the second image I'd turned off my flash and took advantage of the last color in the sky as some gulls flew over.
