p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mammoth Hot Springs Milky Way

I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea and I'll get raked over the coals for realism but a shot of the milky way over this hot spring has been rolling around in my head for a few years now and I somehow had this spot to myself for an entire night to work with. Thankfully the naked hippies aren't keen on this spot in the middle of the night All three images needed for this were shot in place on a Sony A7rII and Sony 2.8/35 ZA. One image was for the sky (2 minutes on a SkyTracker), a four minute exposure to get a "base" foreground image, and then another foreground image with an LED panel since there is no way I could sit still for a few minutes. All blended back together in a hopefully coherent manner. Enjoy!

Rick, it appears one hippie stuck around to muck up your otherwise nice shot.

Seriously, good work.

That's a stellar image to me. Curious, did your sky exposure pick up that much light pollution over the mountains, or did you add that in post for creativity?

Ha, thanks Stan! And I had board shorts on so the naked hippie count was still zero

The sky exposure picked up that much light pollution on it's own and none was added in post. Appreciate the comment!

Good execution on the vision. Might be a bit bright (land) for my taste. Fun spot!

What a fantastic shot.

The light pollution does not even distract from the composition, IMO.

Thanks for sharing that. I can't wait to go back to the eastern Sierra for fall colors at Convict Lake.

Nice!

Is that the upper spring at Wild Willie's? I just discovered all those hot springs this past summer despite going to that area every summer for 15 years running.

Great shot! I would love to see this with the sky directly above the mountains dialed back, less for realism purposes and more for how it would highlight you as the foreground in the hot spring.
