p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Some Grizzlies... a look @ the softer side

I spent about 40 days on the road this summer photographing both wildlife and landscapes in North America and Iceland.
Next year I hope to spend a bit of the summer in the Khutzeymateen, so I considered myself fortunate when I stumbled across a few grizzlies while making my way through the Western Canadian Rockies...

While fishing bears and charging bears are all the rage, I like seeing their more sensitive and thoughtful side too...

** note** a few were posted on the Nikon board earlier this summer
cheers,
bruce

Some wonderful images Bruce, with the last being quite humorous. The expression on the face is precious in this circumstance (anthropomorphism, I know).

The bear crossing shots are a lot of fun. Bears seem to enjoy finding toys.

Well done. The last one could very well be used for a "photo caption" contest.

Thanks Ken, ...I saw the potential here as the bear was walking towards the sign, super glad to have waited it out!

Thanks Douglas... Sometimes it's the strange and unexpected that makes for a unique wildlife image.

Dave, thanks for giving these a look. I have have seen both black and grizzlies to some strange things with miscellaneous stuff in their environment... I think play is hard wired in their DNA and probably has an adaptive value when it comes to finding food in unexpected places.

Thank you louie... teaching high school biology can be pretty challenging work, but having the ability to be temporarily unemployed each summer has its benefits... one of those is an opportunity to take some real time to explore the world.

Thanks Tam... 40 days over 4 trips... it was a crazy good summer that allowed me to return to the Canadian Rockies (last visit was 2012), Teddy Roosevelt NP, Glacier NP, and the Olympic Peninsula. On this first trip, I had that perfect mix of wildlife and landscape photo focus... a 50/50 split and that is how I like it.

Thanks Morris... I too like the second one... kind of a toddler's discovery... "hey look, I've got a foot here too!"
Bears just make me smile.

Thanks for giving these a look... I will likely try to market the last two shots, as I work with a stock agency that will be able to use them... the image was shot in a burst of 7 w/ the D500 and this is the only one where he appeared to be looking of... just a fortuitous catch.

Thank you John...
I love seeing bears in action, chasing fish and splashing in water, but they also seem to do a lot of hanging about, grooming, and sleeping. Like the more robust behaviors, this "softer" side is part of their natural history too.
