I'm trying to wrap my head around the menu items on this page. Even the help guide isn't clear to me.

Menu - Camera 1 >page13/14 Focus Assist> 1st item listed is Focus Magnifier.

It's greyed out until you switch to Manual Focus & or Single Shot AF.
It took me a while to see this because I'm always on Continuous AF.

There's no toggle to keep it on, it seems you have to press the menu item each time before pressing the multi-selector centre button to magnify

In Manual focus turning the lens focus ring magnifies the image but this is toggled on/off by the 5th item on the same page > MF Assist.

Also the 4th item AF in Focus Mag if set to ON. It seems to be that even in AF (again single shot not continuous) you have to first press Focus Magnifier and then centre of the multi selector

Can anyone clarify/simplify the workflow?

I have mine set to C2 (Focus Magnifier) on my A6500.

Works extremely well and I use it all the time.

Has to be either a MF lens (love my Canon FD1.2 with this), lens set to MF, or DMF selected.

I just press it twice and it punches in and I can confirm focus even better than focus peaking. (Use the arrow keys to move the frame around if what you want to focus magnify isn't in the center of the frame). Third press punches in slightly more, 4th one takes you back to where you were.

Should work the same on your A7R3.

I have my AF/MF selector set to DMF toggle that also works well with this setup for the AF lenses.

I wish shutter half press when using MF would take me back to live view.

Thanks for this. I did actually think of the possibility of assigning it to a button. But in my case I've already used up all the buttons so I'll have to rethink & prioritize....

Sorry Frank i'm not quite clear of what you are trying to accomplish. Do you want to magnify while in AF?

Yes, and to try to keep it simple.

I use AF-C 95% of time on A7III so it is annoying that Focus Magnifier cannot be invoked in that mode.

My current setup is that I have C2 set to Focus Magnifier and Multi-Slc Center Btn (joystick center) set to AF/MF Control Hold. I can press and hold joystick center to get out of AF-C and press C2 in addition to that for magnifier. That works for me, though I would prefer if camera would automatically just switched from AF-C to AF-S while using Focus Magnifier and get back to AF-C when no longer used.

My full button configuration is described at the bottom of http://jtra.cz/stuff/review/from-nikon-d750-to-sony-a7iii/en.html

On my A7R3 shutter half press engages IBIS so that when I'm in magnified view mode I see a stabilized view.
I have to press the center of the joystick to get back out to full view, which is awkward as lots of times I miss and actually hit the up/down/left/right instead.

It's workable, but there must be a better way.
