Sony though supporting the A mount with new camera releases, seem to putting the E mount into the forefront. Canon now has 4 mounts. Nikon seems to looking get rid of their crop cameras. Panasonic will do what with FF stop producing for u4/3? Interesting times ahead.

Canon EF-M is dead for sure. So is Nikon 1-mount.

I think the all the old DSLR mounts live dangerously, at least in the long term, regardless of format or manufacturer.

The Nikon 1 mount is dead, since Nikon has discontinued all Nikon 1 products. It happened rather quietly this summer...

Isn’t the E mount up for a revision?

The rumor site showed a Sony patent on an improved E mount (not just an upgrade from plastic to metal and four to six screws).

An improved E mount is still E mount.

May be it is a new mount?

Seems doubtful, unless they plan to offer a mount exchange program for people who shelled out thousands on FE lenses.

Just like the A mount was improved by going from 5 contacts to 8, how will the other makers bringing out brand new mounts deal with legacy. They have to grow their native lenses which can only hurt their previous mounts. Canon is now bringing out III generations which according to lens rentals are the same as II (at least with 70/200), following Sony which brought out g2 lenses which were optically the same, just faster.

I won't make any predictions on the EF and F mounts. Both companies are at their infancy with FF mirrorless. How and to whom they sell is going to answer that question for them. And I don't see Canon making a move away from the EF-M mount when they've got at least one new lens in the hopper and a rumored M5 (I think that's the one) replacement on the way, but I'd say that's the one most in jeopardy of being discontinued in the near future.

Every company no matter how large has a limited R&D budget. When sitting down to decide how to spend that budget...there will be some mount(s) that don't get much of this pie. It's one thing to not kill a mount...but to keep it on life support does no one any good...especially the consumer.

So in Canon's situation, should they design a new lens for their M mount, their APS mount, their EF mount or their new mirrorless FF mount? Can't do all for sure.

Like they did for people who bought A-mount and MD-mount lenses?

A-Mount was a fully mature ecosystem that had been around for 30+ years by the time Sony announced their last camera model for the system. No one was betrayed by Sony shifting focus to E-Mount. If people want a good camera to use their lenses with, the a99ii is still plenty capable.

Sony made adapters for A-mount lenses on Sony E-mount, LA-EA3/4. The switch from MD to A-Mount was undertaken by Minolta, not Sony. Still MD lenses can be used via adapters on the Sony E-mount cameras.

Indeed Sony is alone in supporting screwdriver AF lenses with AF via adapter, something which Nikon doesn't do.

A kludgy adapter is not the same as a mount exchange.

If only sony enabled all on sensor PDAF sensors for all screw drive af lenses including Minolta lenses on not just FE mount adapters but even the a9911, that would demonstrate full support for its existing users.

All six of us were content to stick with the adapters because we still had a-mount cameras. And the MD mount was killed by Minolta long before Sony bought any of their assets.

There would be a much larger riot if they altered the e-mount in a way that forced everyone to start over.

So which are you asking for?

1. A built-in extension tube on the back of the lens that makes it incompatible with A mount, and which would only work for non-screwdrive lenses?

or

2. A mount conversion on an E-mount camera that makes it only compatible with lenses for a mount which will never get new lenses or a new camera?
