p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 2018 Fall Color Reports

Thought for sure there would've been a thread created by now, but since there wasn't, here it is.

Colorado / Summit County

Fall colors are starting to get underway here in CO! I was just up in Breckenridge over the Labor Day weekend and saw plenty of groves along I-70 starting their color change. Some were actually far enough along to really stick out visually among the seas of evergreens.

Color is still spotty of course, and I'd give it approximately 1-2 weeks for things to get really good around Summit County. Well, that's kinda if there's time for them get good, because it seemed like that this year's color might not have time to really get far enough along (before being windblown) due to it being a relatively weak year for snow/rain in the spring and summer. I guess we'll see.

This was yesterday along French Gulch road just outside Breckenridge (shot with my phone):

Boreas Pass was starting to look pretty good too. No photos from there, unfortunately (as some will know, it can be hard to stop long enough to take a photo when other cars are also on the road!).

Quick update on the Crested Butte and McClure Pass area below. I'll try to post regular observations as I'll be in the areas pretty consistently over the next month.

Crested Butte: Overall, about 2-3% changed throughout the area. I noticed a little more action on the far west side of Kebler Pass, whereas the areas around town and to the south are still very green with only a patch of yellow here and there. There did seem to be a decent amount of color in the underbrush along Kebler Pass yesterday, however. Didn't head up past Gothic this time, so I don't know how that's looking just yet. For fun's sake, my guess is that peak for the area is still at least two weeks away... maybe the weekend of 9/22?

McClure Pass: No action at all other than a few branches here and there, as of yesterday afternoon.

Thanks for starting this. I don't remember seeing anyone really start it last year, so I'm glad to see it going this year. I usually run up to the eastern Sierras of California, but this year I may look for somewhere else because the fall foliage wasn't that great last year AND the Highway Patrol had a huge area where they were nailing everybody heading home (Sunday) on a main thorough-faire back to the Bay Area and even though I knew they were doing it, I got ticketed for going 20MPH over the speed limit. Well, gee - I knew they were doing it, funny how I was speeding when I was being careful and even following another car for quite a few miles, so how they picked me out of the crowd, I guess I wasn't from the small town the guy in front of me was from.

So now I'm looking for another place to take photos of the fall foliage. Glad to see this!

Anyone got any updates on CO? Wasn't able to make it out to the mountains this weekend, but I'd imagine things are getting close to peak.

Just returned from Breck area. I would say Boreas Pass is at or very close to its peak. The breeze yesterday was dropping some leaves off.

Just took a speed run from Denver to Carbondale, Mt Sopris, and McClure pass. Had been concerned as non-photographer friends have been saying it's peak color for about 10 days. Fortunately, they are wrong. But, unfortunately, it's a sucky color season.

It's been so dry and so warm that the weaker tree stands, especially those on south and west facing slopes have either turned and lost leaves or are in the process of doing so. These trees are why some friends have been saying peak color is here. But even for these trees, their color is just not as bright as normal. Trees that are on north and east facing slopes (or at higher altitude on other slopes) are still 80% green, and so look like they will be coming on at the normal time. But I would guess they will also be somewhat faded in color.

I'll be back up next week and will report back then.

Colorado / Guanella Pass

The aspens on Guanella Pass looked great today! A lot of them near peak, even a few reddish trees about. Would highly recommend getting out there soon, within the next few days, if anyone intends on shooting around there.

No photos as I didn't have my DSLR, and my primary intent today was actually to do a hike (specifically, summitting Mt. Bierstadt), and not photography. The weather was perfect for hiking anyway, not as much for photography.
